Heads up:
These tactics work significantly better in SaaS than any other niche. Because you have more options in terms of what you can offer for a backlink.
But if you’re not in SaaS, you can still have success with them.
Now, here are the tactics with examples and more.
1. Link bait
2. Giving value
3. Guest posts
4. ABC link swap
5. Infographics
6. HARO
7. Statistics reports
8. Brand mentions
9. Podcast tour
10. Roundups
11. Paying
12. Taking advantage of inbound requests
13. Product reviews
14. Broken links
Now, let's cover each in detail.
1. Creating link bait resources
Link bait is content engineered to drive new links to your site.
This doesn’t necessarily have to be an article. It can also be:
- An infographic
- Interactive web page
- Research-backed study
- Micro SaaS
- Online calculator
- Templates
Essentially, this can be any type of resources or content that's useful for a very large nubmer of people.
And something bloggers or media outlets can write about.
This page is super engaging & pretty, which is why it has generated over 205K backlinks.

So, how do you create link bait resources?
- Use Ahrefs content or site explorer, look up keywords within your niche and find pages that have the most links
- Look up “algolia hacker news” to find the most popular posts on HackerNews for inspiration.
Or…
- Look up “link bait” examples and brainstorm how you can create something similar but for your niche.
E.g. this page is about Inception. But you can take inspiration and create a similar, engaging website explaining different SEO elements.

2. Give value to your prospects
It’s 2023.
Everyone with a site knows the power of backlinks.
Why would anyone link to your website if there's nothing in it for them?
To effectively build links to your SaaS site, you'll want to offer something of value.
For example:
- A backlink in return
- A sponsorship fee
- A upse original, unique resoucre
- A very well-written, SEO-optimized guest post
- Free access or credits to your SaaS
- Sharing something to your Twitter audience of 10k followers
3. Guest posting
This one's been around forever.
But most people do it ONLY to get a backlink.
So, they submit a poorly-written, 500-word guest post and call it a day.
Most sites have caught up to this now and they might refuse your post.
Instead…
Create a detailed, 1,500+ word quality guest post.
That’s also SEO-optimized for a relevant keyword and ACTUALLY valuable for the site’s audience.
Then, share it on your socials as well.
Here’s how to find relevant sites for this:
- Decide on type of blogs you want to guest post on
- Look up blogs that fit your criteria
- Create list of sites you find (look up "[niche]" blog "guest post")
- Check out their guest posting criteria (if they have it) and send a personalized email
4. ABC link swap
This is one of the best ways to get links at scale.
Instead of:
- Site A links to B
- B then links to A
Do this:
- A links to B
- B links to C
- C links to A
Since the 3 sites aren't linking to each other, this is safer as well.
Win-win!
You can also combine this with guest posting.
- Team up with 3-5 other sites
- Create a guest post
- Link to those 5 sites
- Gain 5 other links in return
That’s 5 links from one guest post.
Not bad, right?
5. Create engaging infographics
The beauty of infographics is that they’re easy to distribute.
With guest posts, you have to create unique posts for each site.
With infographics though, you can submit the SAME one to hundreds of sites without any extra work.
For one of our clients (resume maker SaaS), we created a resume infographic of Elon Musk (you can look it up) and promoted it online.
This landed them 570+ links total.
The “how” of infographics is pretty straightforward.
- Use Ahrefs content explorer to find infographics that got a ton of links in the past
- Come up with unique infographic ideas
- Work with a designer
- Promote to bloggers and journalists
6. Try HARO
HARO matches journalists with relevant sources.
- Journalists submit what they're looking for (insights, examples, expertise, etc.)
- Users sign up and receive daily email with requirements
- You reach out to good matches and pitch a response
7. Create statistics or trend reports
Think about it.
What kind of sources are content writers likely to link to?
Statistics or data compilations, of course!
They constantly Google topics like "[niche] statistics".
So, you create pages to capture those links.

8. Claim unlinked brand mentions
An unlinked brand mention is when someone mentions your site without including a hyperlink.
So, you find those mentions and reach out asking for a backlink!
How do you find unlinked brand mentions?
You can use Ahrefs Content Explorer and:
- Search for your brand name
- Exclude your domain
- Apply relevant filters and highlight unlinked domains
9. Go on a podcast tour
How is this relevant to SaaS link building?
With each podcast, you usually get 1-3 backlinks to your site.
The average podcast lasts just under an hour, making it a very effective method for building links.
How do you find relevant podcasts?
- Create a list of podcasters in your niche
- Reach out with a pitch or fill out their form
- Explain what makes your story exciting and how you help people
The cherry on the cake is that podcast episodes often get syndicated, which can result in even MORE backlinks.
10. Get featured in roundup posts
A roundup post usually covers products, influencers, or companies under a certain listicle.
E.g.
- Top X SaaS founders to follow
- Top Y tools for (audience)
- 10 SaaS founders explain how they get leads
11. Paying for backlinks (when it makes sense)
Paying for links is very standard part of SEO.
In fact, in some niches like CBD, gambling, and others - paying for links is the ONLY way to go.
Here’s to make sure you’re paying ONLY for legit sites though.
12. Take advantage of inbound backlink requests
If your blog's been around for a while, chances are, you receive tons of link requests every month.
You can take advantage of this instead of ignoring them and ask for a link swap or guest post instead.
Here's a possible template
"Hey [name],
Thanks for reaching out! Sure, we can add the link to your site in our resource.
We'd need you to help return the favor though.
Saw you guys have a blog post about (topic). I think a "further reading" link to our post about (topic) would add a lot of value to...
your readers.
Is this something you'd be interested in?
Best,
(Your name)."
13. Product reviews
Want new users AND backlinks?
Create a list of tech blogs that review SaaS products and reach out and offer something in exchange:
- Free access to your SaaS for a month
- Sponsorship fee
- Affiliate partnership
14. Broken link building
Last but not least, this is another effective SaaS link-building technique.
- Create list of sites you’d like a link from
- Input the sites on Ahrefs and find broken outgoing links
- Reach out and ask them to replace with a backlink to your site instead
Now, what about the outreach email?
It depends. But if you’re not sure where to start, feel free to take some inspiration from the template below.
Make sure to modify so it feels “you” though.
Too many people steal templates without making any changes.
SL: Quick q, (name)
"Hey (name),
Was looking up some of the best blogs in the (topic) niche and stumbled upon your site. (Genuine compliment).
I'm (name), and I'm a (role) at (company). I was wondering if (website) is open to collaborating on backlinks with us...
If you can insert a link back to our site in one of your existing blog posts, in exchange, we can give you:
- A backlink from one of our upcoming guest posts
- Shout-out to your brand on our social media (10k+ followers on Twitter)
- X USD one-time sponsorship fee
Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in, (name).
Best,
(Your name)."

1. Link bait
2. Giving value
3. Guest posts
