Every year, International E-Waste Day is observed on the 14th October.
This day aims to raise the public profile of responsible e-waste recycling and encourage consumers to recycle their e-waste with the resulting increase in recycling rates on the day itself and into the future.
It was first introduced in 2018 by the Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Forum to raise awareness of the need for e-waste recycling among consumers.
This year will be 6th edition of International E-Waste Day.
Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Forum:
1. It is the world's largest multi-national centre of competence as regards operational know-how concerning the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment.
2. It is a not-for-profit association of 50 WEEE producer responsibility organizations across the world.
3. In April 2002, six WEEE producer responsibility organizations with operations in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland founded the WEEE Forum.
4. Headquarters: Brussels, Belgium.
5. From India, Karo Sambhav, Indiaโ€™s leading Producer Responsibility Organization joined the WEEE Forum in January 2020.
According to the United Nations, 8 kg of e-waste per person will be produced worldwide in 2023. This means 61.3 million tonnes of electronic waste discarded within a year โ€“ more than the weight of the Great Wall of China.
Only 17.4 % of this waste, containing a mixture of harmful substances and precious materials, will be recorded as being properly collected, treated, and recycled globally.
The remaining 50.6 million tonnes will be either placed in landfill, burned, or illegally traded and treated in a sub-standard way or simply hoarded in the households.
