An additional THAAD battery is being deployed to the Middle East. What is THAAD and what does this mean?
Let's learn about it in this 🧡
1/n
THAAD is the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense.
It is designed to intercept short and medium range ballistic missiles at the end of their midcourse stage or during the terminal stage. That is just before the final and during the final stage of flight.
2/n
It works by firing a missile, called a Kill Vehicle, at the incoming missile on an intercept course. The KV directly impacts the incoming missile. This kinetic impact destroys the KV and incoming missile.
3/n
A THAAD battery consists of 4 components:
1. Launcher
2. Interceptor
3. Radar
4. Fire Control
Each Battery has 6-9 launchers with 8 interceptors per launcher.
4/n
What does this mean?
The DoD assesses that the threat to US assets in the region has increased sufficiently to warrant the operational deployment of this system. This is due to increased activity from Iranian backed militias.
5/n
The downing of the 4 cruise missiles by the USS Carney on the 19th seems to have been a concerning development for the DoD. Based on that action, and yet undisclosed intelligence, they diverted the IKE CSG to the region.
