Why does My Dress Up Darling have fanservice? Why can't Gojo and Marin be in college? I'm here to answer these questions. Feel free to chime in if you have an opinion, but remember to keep it respectful please.
The reason this series has fanservice can be summed up pretty easily; it is because Marin Kitagawa likes it. Putting it another way, My Dress Up Darling is about accepting and supporting the things other people love and Marin loves ecchi.
Marin Kitagawa's love for fanservice is a well-established fact but is considered atypical for girls by society. This plays into the themes of acceptance and respecting what other people like regardless of gender. That's always been one of the biggest themes of this series.
Throughout this series, Marin is always the one pushing societal boundaries of what is considered acceptable for girls to like. She plays eroge, watches ecchi anime, and loves underboob. This is who she is. And this is why the series has fanservice.
Also, teenagers are horny. I had the chance to speak with some high school students recently, and they are the horniest mfers I have ever met. This story is being told from the perspective of two healthy high schoolers. Of course, it's going to be laced with sexual tension.
The only time I felt uncomfortable with the fanservice was when Gojo walked in on Sajuna Inui when she was naked. I'm always big on consent, and she had no desire to be seen. That said, I won't lie and say I didn't laugh. It was funny. I just felt bad for Sajuna.
But couldn't they be in college? I've heard this argument before, but it's under the assumption that Gojo and Marin would even attend college. While Marin MIGHT (and that's a big if) go to college, Gojo would definitely not. Not every Japanese pereson attends college.
I'm gonna start with Gojo. Gojo's life goal is to become a kashira and make hina dolls. Immediately after graduating high school, he will end up working for his grandfather. There's no reason for him to attend college. At most, he might apprentice under his grandpa's friends.
Marin Kitagawa is a model and it's very likely that, after graduating from high school, she will become a model full time. Sure, she could attend college. But why would she need to when modeling earns her a phat paycheck? Modeling would be more lucrative and help her buy cosplay.
This isn't even getting into the other issues. Imagine if Gojo remained a recluse all throughout high school? Anyone who has shut themselves away knows how hard it is to re-enter society. With his social anxiety, it is unlikely Gojo would ever leave his house after graduating.
Marin is the one who pulled Gojo from the dark hole he made for himself and brought him into the light. She showed him how beautiful the world can be by accepting him for who he is and dragging him along behind her. This is what forged their bond and made him fall for her.
And what about Marin? She would have either learned how to sew by the time she graduated, or she would be earning enough money to pay professional cosplay makers to create her cosplay. She'd have no need for Gojo. Supposing they did meet, he'd be just another face in the crowd.
Gojo and Marin's meeting was a twist of fate. Gojo's sewing machine broke and he decided to use the home ec's sewing machine. He only did that because he thought no one would be there. Marin's presence was a surprise. He never would have gone there if he knew he'd bump into her.
If things had not happened the exact way they did, it is unlikely Marin and Gojo would have ever met. Their meeting and the way they bonded is so situational that no other setting would have worked. It could only happen because they are in high school.
Could Marin and Gojo have been older? Yes. Fukuda could have made them 16-17. They would have still been in high school, but I respect Fukuda's choice. I think she wanted them to meet as freshmen so they could spend their entire high school years together.
Anyway, I'm totally cool with people saying they don't like My Dress Up Darling or that they dislike fanservice, but I think it's stupid when people trash on the series because of it. If you don't like something, say so and move on. Don't be a dick about it.
What do you think about fanservice? Do you like it? Hate it? How did you feel about the fanservice in My Dress Up Darling?
