Mastering SQL Server Log Shipping: A Case Study πŸ“Š
Introduction to Log Shipping: Log shipping in SQL Server ensures data consistency between primary and secondary databases. Recently, I faced an interesting challenge while configuring a report on a secondary database. Let's unravel this story. 🧩
The Scenario: Imagine a financial institution needing real-time reports for daily transactions. The secondary database (used for reporting) is log-shipped from the primary. Reports need accurate, up-to-the-minute data. πŸ“ˆ
3. Configuring Log Shipping: Setting up log shipping seemed straightforward, but here's the catch: report generation coincided with the log restoration time. If reports overlapped with restoration, data discrepancies could occur. Not ideal for financial reports! πŸ’Έ
4. Scheduling Report Generation: To maintain data integrity, we strategically scheduled report generation during periods when log restoration wasn't active. This ensured that the reporting database was consistent and accurate, even during high transaction periods. βŒ›οΈ
5. Read 3 and 4 again to understand each word...
6. In conclusion: - You will need to schedule the LS-Restore to occur when people are not using the reporting platform. Probably After the closing hours or in the midnight. Therefore, you simply educate your users to this fact of when to run their reporting.
