@garyruskin 1) We know that he was very stressed regarding a NHI/Fauci meeting, that he knew a lot about what was going on at the SZL lab/WIV during that time, and that he discussed that with friends. Any such conversations and wordings indicating stress/panic could be helpful.
@garyruskin 2) Here, he writes "looks like we found OUR highly variable virus". This term was previously used to describe synthetic viruses assembled with the same type IIs enzyme (BsmBI), which allow for a high degree of variability with regards to replacing viral segments.
@garyruskin 3) Based on this, I don't think that he was directly involved in the design/synthesis of this specific infectious clone, but that he immediately recognized the cloning strategy that he had developed. Ben Hu/SZL knew how to adapt his methods to their needs since before 2017.
@garyruskin 4) The most recognizable feature of such a "highly variable" infectious clone is the type IIs restriction site pattern (details: biorxiv.org). Kristian Andersen likely also recognized this.
The inserted FCS mentioned in DEFUSE is also very obvious (see Garry).
@garyruskin 5) Regarding the FCS: as suggested in DEFUSE, the one in SARS2 is a "human-specific" sequence.
It is identical to the FCS in ENaC-alpha, which was published by UNC colleagues Kota, Gentzsch, Dang, Boucher & Stutts in 2018. These could be relevant key words/discussion partners.
@garyruskin 6) There are also methods to make such viruses without leaving trails (key word No See'm). This was not done with SARS2, as they wanted to make too many virus variants, but it could have been content of discussions.
(like Q:"how could you tell?" A:"wasn't No See'm")
@garyruskin all of this is speculative, based on very few messages, to be taken with a grain of salt. still, I wanted to put this here rather than into an email so that others can comment/expand on this.
