Sverre Nypan: SCOUT REPORT + PROFILE
One of Norway’s biggest talents this century and a starter for Rosenborg, what makes Sverre Nypan a target for top clubs around Europe?
[THREAD]
Joining Rosenborg in 2020, Nypan became the youngest player in UEFA Youth League history at 14 years, 9 months and 11 days old. In January 2022, he signed his first pro contract, making his debut and becoming the youngest player/starter in Rosenborg history at 15 years, 322 days.
In May 2023, he scored his first goal for the club against Bodø/Glimt, also becoming the youngest league goalscorer in the club’s history aged 16 years and 145 days, alerting many top clubs to him.
Player profile:
Age: 16

Position: CM/AM
Role: Advanced playmaker
Strengths: Passing, creativity, football IQ, technique, vision, dribbling, movement, stamina, ambidexterity, work-rate
Weaknesses: Shooting
He reminds me a lot of Luka Modric, as a near-complete 8/10 with the ability to play deeper if needed, with creative passing and ball-carrying at a high level + the willingness to get back and defend. All-encompassing profile.
He’s a very powerful runner for his age, able to dribble at high speed through the middle of the pitch, eliminating players and single-handedly creating opportunities for his teammates. He’s almost unstoppable when he gets going.
You wouldn’t call him the strongest player, but he’s a tough matchup physically as he can use his body superbly to get in front of opponents, with his low centre of gravity and close control making him very difficult to knock off the ball.
As mentioned previously, his dribbling is mostly about his running power, but his ball control and use of feints are at a high level too, enabling good play between the lines and making him effective at tight space dribbling with his decision-making.
He’s incredibly creative, with the vision and technique to pull of almost any pass, seeing opportunities that most people watching couldn’t see and managing to execute a perfect pass, with final 1/3rd creation at an incredible level for his age.
What makes him so good at making these killer passes is his knowledge of when to wait and when to execute the pass, he always hesitates for a split second for a gap to open up, where he can exploit that opening and create a goal scoring opportunity.
He loves picking up pockets between the defensive and midfield lines, before turning and looking for a killer pass, his first touch and decision-making are brilliant and help him receive in congested areas well.
Another aspect of his movement is his late runs into the box for a cutback, something that could easily get him 10+ goals a season if he keeps it up, as well as improving his finishing. A deadly weapon in his arsenal, he has the potential to be so dangerous in the final third.
He’s not just all attack though, he’s tenacious and always tracks back for his team as well as pressing well out of possession, with his defensive acumen and work rate making him a truly complete 8 able to excel in nearly any role.
With Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton all reportedly interested in Nypan, Rosenborg will have a tough time keeping hold of him. In my opinion, he should stay for another year or two before making a decision on his future, as he’s only 16 and needs to be polished.
Adding Nypan to this? Their attack and midfield is sorted for the next decade, easily. Norway cannot afford to waste this golden generation, better defenders are needed urgently.
