Most SEOs suck at creating outlines.
They give the writer a keyword to write about & call it a day.
A good outline is the difference between ranking #1 or #20.
Steal my EXACT process I use for outlines NOW. 🧵
(Followed this process to grow sites to 5M/mo traffic w/ content)
Or…

You could be the best writer in the world…
But if you don’t have the right SEO knowledge, you’ll end up with content that ā€œreads wellā€, but does NOT rank.
Here’s the thing:
Outlines are NOT just about covering what to write about under a certain topic…
2/15
Instead, when creating outlines, I analyze what’s currently ranking and their content gaps.
Are the current articles missing something?
If so, how can we create better content to outrank them?
Here are some "gaps" I look at when creating outlines:
3/15
- Are the current articles fresh? (Google likes new content)
- Are they long-form or a simple 500-word surface-level overview?
- Do they have any images or visuals?
- Can it be more SEO-optimized?
- Does it provide enough value?
- Is it missing something?
- And so on
4/15
I asked ChatGPT to give me a random SEO keyword and it said ā€œSEO metricsā€.
Some info on the keyword:
- Commercial/informational intent
- Around 1,300/mo volume
- 63% KD
- Listicle type article
- Might need some backlinks
Here’s how I’d create an outline for this. šŸ‘‡
5/15
The first thing you might notice is that there are a bunch of competitive, high-authority brands ranking for this keyword.
Seems scary at first, but what gives me hope is that their articles are from 2021.
Google likes fresh content, so, that’s an opportunity.
6/15
When creating content, we want to provide MORE value than what’s ranking.
However, if the top article is 2,000 words, we can’t just create a 3,000-word article for the sake of being longer.
We want to be more DETAILED and VALUABLE.
Word count is NOT a ranking factor.
7/15
The Ahrefs article is VERY solid and detailed.
BUT:
- The article is from 2021 (SEO algorithm changes quickly)
- They don’t cover ā€œPeople also ask questionsā€
- They don’t cover "ā€˜indirectā€ metrics (i.e. not a ranking factor, but helps you rank)
8/15
They also show how to view most of those metrics within Ahrefs.
Of course, they’re biased because they own the tool and want people to use it.
But I’d also show a few examples with GA because it’s free and not everyone might be using Ahrefs.
9/15
Of course, there’s a LOT they’re doing well in this article.
So, I’d also note down the structure (what the metric means, why it’s useful, how to track it), how UX-friendly the page is, and more.
Here’s what we have so far:
10/15
From here, I’d also go through the other articles and note down:
- What other SEO metrics would be relevant to cover
- What are #3-5 ranking articles doing well that #1-2 aren’t
- How we can add more value (e.g. where to find those metrics AND how to improve them)
11/15
Most writers just go through the top #1-#4 articles and regurgitate what’s already been said.
Without adding anything new.
In reality, you want to add value that has NOT been said before.
Here’s how…
12/15
Of course, being a topic expert helps.
But if you’re a writer looking to add real value, consider:
- Interviewing topic experts (e.g. person you’re working under)
- Going through industry reports
- And quoting experts from your niche
13/15
With this in mind, here’s how I’d continue the outline.
- Analyze other articles and what metrics they cover
- Give the EXACT metrics for the writer to cover
- Explain why the metric matters and how to improve it (other articles don’t do this well)
14/15
Finally, as a topic expert, I can safely say there are SEO metrics people argue about the importance of.
So, to add even MORE value, I’d add a section about ā€œindirectā€, other important SEO metrics.
Here, I’d cover metrics that don’t matter as much for SEO and why.
15/15
Now, that’s a wrap.
