This is what I dream Islamic studies to look like
Shariati's approach to the Quran was a stroke of genius. A sociologist by profession, he held the Quran to be its own standard, and discovered themes in it of incredible authenticity, never discussed before

He mentions briefly the instance of the Hijra in the seerah of the Muslims to Abyssinia and then again of everyone to Madinah.
Previous readings of the seerah held it to be no more than a historical detail, and at best of only political significance
Shariati however, focuses more specifically on the way the Quran discusses the matter, and concludes that migration is perceived to be of significant philosophical and social principle.
Even the philosophers of history, he continues, have never given it much attention while...+
...it turns out to be a primary factor in the rise of civilizations throughout history.
All 27 major civilizations in fact, were born out of a migration that preceded them, there is not a single exception to this rule. The converse also proves it to be true, that no...+
...primitive peoples have evolved into an advanced culture without first moving from its homeland and migrating.
Shariati highlights how a topic so relevant to history and sociology was deduced from the tone and discussion of migration from within the Quran alone.
He goes onto note that all civilizations from the most ancient to the most recent, all of them came to be at the heels of migration. And that all primitive peoples remained primitive as long as they hesitated to migrate.
This was just one theme, briefly discussed, the Quran...+
...is filled with undiscovered treasures. Shariati concludes that his understanding of sociology and history advanced in unexpected ways once he gave the Quran that special attention.
