Thread - NRI Sponsored Students and Meritocracy:
1. This year, the NEET qualification across categories was for General Category: 137/720 or 19% marks
and for SC/ST it was 107/720 marks or 15% marks.
2. The real issue is the NRI sponsored seats generally grabbed by students residing in India but pay the fees in dollars.
3. In BV Medical College, Sangli a candidate with a NEET rank of 1110592 (NEET score of just 121 or 17%) secured an NRI seat. paying an annual fee of Rs 72,56,200 (3.6 crores for 5 years) against the normal fees of 21.03 lacs per annum (1.05 crores for 5 years).
4. In Sri Siddhartha Medical College in Karnataka, while the general category cutoff was rank 431784, an NRI candidate with rank 1206440 (15% marks) paid Rs. 40,00,000 p.a((2 crores for 5 years) to secure a seat. The normal fees are 17,75,000 p.a (Rs.88 lacs for full course).
5. In KIMS, Bhubaneswar, the NEET general category cutoff was rank 273827. However, an NRI sponsored student with rank 10,10, 813 paid Rs.42,00,000 p.a (Rs.2.1 crores for 5 years) and secured a seat. The normal fees are 18,50,000 p.a.
6. The situation is grimmer for NEET PG. For comparison, only MD Radio Diagnosis were considered. NEET PG is a 3 year course and 2.08 lac students appeared for the exam. The Govt. reduced the qualification to ZERO as they could not find students who could pay the high fees.
7. In Dr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil Rural Medical College, Loni, an NRI seat was filled by rank of 113593 for Rs 1,46,33,600 (Rs.4.4 crores over 3 years) while the last management seat in the college was filled by rank 15005 with an annual fee of Rs 30,00,000 (90 lacs for 3 years).
8. In Santosh Medical College, Ghaziabad, General cutoff rank was 66,660 with an annual fee of Rs 76,00,000. However, an NRI seat with rank 102746 paid a fee of Rs 1,40,00,000 (Rs.4.2 crores for 3 years).
9. In the name of meritocracy, we fight for the cause of those getting 19% marks to disadvantage those getting 15% marks from socially backward categories. We are OK to have children from disadvantaged communities compared with our children and judged equally only on marks
However, the NRI seats are always ignored as it is an option and a pathway to all of us who can afford pay and secure a seat despite lacking in merit. Read the detailed story here:
