hosoda pandered so hard to america, hiring frozen's character designer & trying to get miyazaki canceled in the US for unrealistic portrayals of women or w/e. meanwhile all miyazaki did was go "america sucks, disney sux, frozen sux, let it go sucks" & yet-

to be 100% fair I wouldn't be TOO surprised if Miyazaki did some legit bad cancel-worthy stuff given some of the weird-ass things he said "as a joke" but my point still stands that you don't need to buckdance for America be successful in America
his point was that "they're too idealized, they need to be down to earth & relatable blahblah" which sounds like something a bad youtuber would say. dunno if he really believes it tho; I think he's still sore about Miyazaki replacing him as Howl's director
I have no idea if he said similar things in Japanese interviews, but the comments Hosoda made to Americans to puff himself up & dunk on Miyazaki around the time Belle came out seemed very carefully chosen to appeal to what he saw as the US cultural zeitgeist
