In 2017, Man City paid a record £175,000 for a 13-year-old.
4 years later he made his debut alongside superstars like Kevin De Bruyne.
His name. Finley Burns.
Here's 5 key character traits, to benefit players, which he showed when I coached him between 2016 to 2017.
1. Humility
Even when Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool were after Finlely at the same time, he remained focused on learning, playing and developing on and off the pitch.
Even on his last day at of training he made sure to complete his food diary before he left.
2. Growth Mentality
Originally Finley started as a striker but was moved to centre back as part of his development.
Not only did he thrive in the positionaly change, but showed an understanding of how to adapt to meet and exceed the demands of his new position.
3. Tactical Awareness
This was highlighted during a bio-banding session.
Finley played against players two years older than him but was able to read the triggers and the game well enough to have a higher number of interceptions than requirements to tackle.
4. Resillience
Very quickly Finley started to play 2 ages groups above, despite being the youngest in his age group.
He demonstrated a consistent level of resillience to survive through the clear physical challenges presented to him and find ways to survive, strive and thrive.
5. Respect
A common thread shared by all the coaches Finley worked with was his level of respect and readiness to listen, learn and implement.
The opportunity and price tag never negatively influenced his character or apporach to training.
