THREAD Pass as late as possible, as early as necessary
A principle Brighton uses regularly in their build-up. The ball carrier waits for the opponent to press. This reduces the distance between the ball carrier and the presser but increases the space for the eventual receiver.
This exercise implicitly trains this principle. Starting in a 3x3 grid the red team attacks the top goal and blue the goal at the bottom. The end of the grid is also the offside line. 8 seconds of possession is 1 point, which forces the defenders to press. A goal is 3 points.
The receiver has 1 touch or 4+ touches, except for two situations:
1 - The ball carrier is in the same section as at least one opponent, which stimulates the ball carrier to attract an opponent to create space higher up the field.
2 - The receiver is in a section where the attacking team has a numerical superiority. This also allows the ball carrier to speed up play when there's already weakness within the opponent's defensive structure.
