7 Things You Should Consider When Buying Sunglasses
1. Glasses must block ultraviolet rays
The sun's rays emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which human eyes cannot detect or feel. The sunglasses, which allow us to protect our eyes from the sun, must have UV protection and be suitable for your eyes.
The sunglasses absolutely must be certified regarding cutting off UV or ultraviolet rays. Normally, every lens can block UV at different rates; however, special coatings must be required for an effective UV-blocking system.
The power of the sunglasses to block light is indicated by inscriptions such as UV200, UV400, and UV600. Especially at the seaside and when you are skiing, sunglasses with minimum UV400 protection are required.
2. It Must have CE (Conformitรฉ Europรฉene) Certificate
Quality sunglasses must have a reliable registration certificate. Since 1995, CE (European Conformity) has been marked on quality sunglasses according to European Union standards.
The CE certificate states that the product meets the minimum safety requirements. When buying sunglasses, make sure that the lenses are stained with mica, and check if there are scratches, blisters, and curvatures on the lenses.
3. Glasses Must be Focused on a Vertical Line
Another way to understand quality is to focus on a vertical line after wearing the sunglasses. In this case, when you move the sunglass, which is without prescription, the image does not move as well.
When you move the sunglass slightly up and down or right to left, if there are refractions in line, then the sunglass isn't suitable.
4. Light Absorption Rate Should Be Appropriate
The 'lilight absorption rate' in the operating instructions indicates how much of the lenses absorb, reflect, and how much light comes from outside: 40โ€“50 per cent in urban environments, 50โ€“70 per cent in mountainous regions where sun rays come steeper, and 80โ€“85 per cent absorption by sea and sky are suitable.
5. Not Every Expensive Glasses Qualified
It is not enough for the sunglasses to prevent excess light from passing. On the contrary, it harms because when the colorede lens is attached, the pupil does not shrink.
Thus, harmful UV rays enter the eye in abundance. A sunglass needs to be certified for quality and UV blocking.
6. Mirrored or Polarized Glasses Do Not Provide Extra Protection
Since mirrored lenses reflect some of the light coming into the eye, they can be preferred, especially at the seaside where there is intense light.
However, mirrored coatings reduce the amount of light to the eye but do not affect the UV blocking rate.
Although the polarized lens feature is not normally associated with UV blocking, both polarized and effective UV lenses provide safer and better viewing comfort.
7. Do Not Ever Use Imitation Sunglasses
It is better not to use imitation sunglasses than not to use them at all. Sunglasses, which only block visible light but do not provide a blockage against UV rays, disable the natural ability of the pupil to protect itself from the eye.
Since the pupil will open well in the dark environment provided by the sunglasses, invisible UV rays enter too much from the open pupil. Therefore, fake sunglasses without UV filters should not be used.
