Polygyny in light of the Bible and Islām
[🧵]
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Polygyny, Men having multiple wives, is not something invented by Islām. For instance,
God in the Bible prescribe laws legislating and permitting it.
Many Prophets and Figures in the Bible had Multiple Wives and Concubines.
God in the Bible infact, gives the wives of Saul to King David.
Tertullian (155 - 220 AD) concedes that polygyny was lawful in Old Testament times, but that the Law had to be modified later on by the Church.

Martin Luther (1483–1546) concedes he cannot forbid someone marrying multiple women, because it is legislated in the Bible.
Christian Scholar, Dr. Daniel O. McClellan, rebuked the liberal christians for lying about polygyny in the Bible.
Before Islām came in Arabia, Men could have dozens of wives. Prostitution, Adultery, Fornication etc. was the norm.
Islām restricted Men to not Marry more than four, and abolished all other indecent acts.
The Verse in the Qur’ān doesnʼt state itʼs obligatory, or even recommended to Marry four wives,
ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ and other scholars like Imām al-Qurṭubī explained, that the verse is revealed to show the permissibility
(not obligatory or recommended)
Infact no Āyah in the Qur’ān, and no statement of the Prophet ﷺ ever encouraged to Marry Multiple Women.
Imām al-Shāfiʿī said,
It is preferable for him to limit himself to one, even if it is permissible for him to do more, due to the Almighty’s saying: (But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hands possess. That is more suitable that you
may not incline [to injustice])
(Qur’ān 4:3)
Abū al-Ḥusayn al-ʿImrānī said:
For someone other than the Prophet ﷺ it was better for him to limit himself to one, fearing that he might not be just. As for the Prophet ﷺ he had the ability to be just with multiple wives.
Imām al-Ḥajjāwī said,
“It is recommended that it not be more than one, if chastity is achieved by it, because of what it entails is exposure to forbidden things. Allāh ﷻ said:
(And you will not be able to do maintain justice between your wives no matter how careful you
are) [Qur’ān 4:129].
And he ﷺ, said:
Imām al-Buhūtī said,
“It is recommended not to marry more than one wife if he can maintain chastity with her, as it might expose him to what is forbidden.”
Ibn Khaṭīb said: “The majority of our scholars recommend not marrying more than one wife.”
Shaykh Ibn ʿUṯhaymīn said,
“If she stipulates (in marriage contract) that he should not take another wife, this is permissible.. She has a reason to ask him not to marry another wife and she is not transgressing against anyone. The husband himself is the one who is giving up
his right; if he has the right to marry more, he is giving it up. So what is to prevent this condition being valid? Hence the correct view is that of Imām Aḥmad, that this condition is valid.”
As for the Prophet ﷺ marrying multiple women, it is not because of the Sunnah. Rather because of Wisdom,
For instance his Marriage, with Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith, as al-Ḥāfiḏh Ibn Ḥajar mentions,
Her Husband died, and the Prophet ﷺ felt bad for her, so he married.
His Marriage with Juwayriyyah, was to free her from Slavery.
Upon the action of the Prophet ﷺ marrying her, 100 families of slaves were set free.
Look at the wisdom, Subḥān Allāh.
al-Ḥāfiḏh Ibn Ḥajar mentions the wisdom behind the Prophet ﷺ to marry multiple women was,
That there were rulings, he ﷺ wanted to convey to us. His private affairs to the Ummah.
(Muslims follow him in his private and public affairs, he is our role model)
Al-Suyūṭi says,
“Allāh intended to convey the private aspects of the Prophet ﷺ life, as well as outward matters, through his wives. These include things we may hesitate to mention, and the Prophet ﷺ, being the most shy, had wives who could transmit these private matters.
Allāh, in His wisdom, granted the Prophet wives who could convey what they saw and heard in privacy, contributing to the complete transmission of the Sharīʿāh. As the number of women increased, the capacity to share private aspects also grew. Through the Prophet ﷺ wives, we
learn about menstruation, waiting periods, ritual purification, and other aspects. It's crucial to note that the Prophet ﷺ did not marry for desires; rather, his affection for women was rooted in their ability to transmit private information... They played a key
role in transmitting knowledge about prayers, revelations, and other aspects of the religion that others couldn't convey.”
Also note, other marriages of his ﷺ were because of revelation of Allāh, and for political ties. All wives were either divorced or widow, Except one.
In conclusion, the general ruling on Polygyny, itʼs permissible (providing you fulfill all the rights)
At times it can become Ḥarām, and sometimes recommended (i.e you wanna help divorced women, you fear committing Adultery etc.)
