I get annoyed when politicians describe health worker shortages as a “legacy” problem.
This is a NEW crisis as the contract system, introduced in Dec 2016 to resolve a “glut”, backfired and caused severe shortages instead post-pandemic.
It’s a new problem for the unity govt.
A spike in resignations of doctors & nurses from the public health service wasn’t a problem “inherited” from previous governments.
This happened AFTER the pandemic — coinciding with Anwar govt.
And since when were housemen shortages a “legacy” problem? This has never happened.
HCWs were the first to ring alarm bells, as early as Jan 2023 in CodeBlue’s poll of more than 1,600 HCWs (mostly doctors) in MOH.
Yet, MOH and the Anwar govt largely ignored HCW concerns, even though MOH has its own data on escalating attrition rate of doctors and nurses.
The nurses’ reassignment exercise from specialist clinics to wards in MOH hospitals began as early as July 2023.
So obviously, the impact of HCW shortages were already beginning to be felt last year.
Yet, no public acknowledgement from govt on how serious the problem is.
Now we’re faced with a Zero HO Protocol in the Department of Medicine in UMMC.
From anecdotal reports, it seems like the housemen shortage is also affecting other uni hospitals, like HUKM.
Even if govt doesn’t have an immediate solution, the govt needs to admit the problem.
It looks like the Anwar govt may have to come up with a solution that is just as radical as the contract system.
And unlike the contract system proposal which took some time, any solution now is far more urgent because a shortage, unlike a glut, is urgent and more harmful.
