Developing youth players, a thread 🧵:
Developing youth football players involves a comprehensive approach that focuses on both their technical skills and overall development as individuals. Here are some key aspects to consider when it comes to the best way to develop youth football players:
️⃣ Create a Fun and Positive Environment: Make sure the training sessions and matches are enjoyable for the players. Encourage positive interactions, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Players are more likely to develop and thrive when they are having fun.
⃣ Age-Appropriate Training: Structure the training sessions based on the age and skill level of the players. Younger children require simpler activities and shorter sessions, while older players can handle more complex drills and longer practice times.
⃣ Keep the ball rolling: Aim to have the ball rolling for more than 70% of your total training session time and avoid any practices or drills that include players standing still or queueing. Players will naturally be more engaged if they are more involved.
⃣ Develop Tactical Understanding: Teach players basic tactical concepts such as positioning, movement off the ball, and team formations. Help them understand the importance of teamwork and decision-making on the field.
⃣ Focus on Game Realism: Incorporate game-like situations and exercises in training sessions. Simulate match scenarios and encourage players to make decisions under pressure. This helps players develop their ability to apply skills and tactics in real-game situations.
⃣ Provide Feedback and Encouragement: Offer constructive feedback to players individually and as a team. Recognize their efforts and improvements. Encourage a growth mindset and help players learn from their mistakes.
⃣ Long-Term Player Development: Focus on the long-term development of players rather than short-term results. Give them opportunities to progress through different levels and challenges as they improve their skills.
⃣ Small-sided games: Encourage small-sided games, such as 4v4 or 5v5, which provide ample opportunities for players to touch the ball, make decisions, and experience different game situations. Small-sided games enhance player involvement &improve their ability to read the game.
