to an extent yes, it played a big role in otaku culture historically and still does, but it's not the same style; I'm referring to a brand of lolicon otaku style.
like "dude even the UI looks like certain hentai games I've played. it's clearly part of that lineage". back in the day Bobservo acknowledged Azumanga's clearly aiming for "that crowd" & just went "oh well". dunno if nerds don't notice these things anymore or they're disingenuous
sure but back then you could argue with people who at least had basic observational sense, or didn't pick & choose whether to engage or not engage with said observational sense depending on what "feels right" at the moment.
I'm sure they still would. there was this 2000s forum I posted on full of Livejournal fangirl types where they got really mad when I said it was a loli game
that's a valid point. at the same time, how often does that contrast happen? isn't it better to not assume everything with that aesthetic is gonna be deep & serious and be surprised if it is?
honestly I don't fucking know lol. maybe I'll get brain-raped into getting into Muv Luv eventually but as of now I'm not there yet. I used to say the same about buying anime toys so who knows
not the same cuz cartoons, comics, even "visual novels"/"ADVs" aren't books and visuals play a far bigger part in the story. but even then shitty tacky book covers for good books shouldn't exist (I own a bunch cuz I get the cheapest I can find)
