Marathas claim Bankapur chiefs are descendants of Goa Kadambas & that Bankapur chiefs are Marathas.
But they are blood relations of the Kannadiga Jain Saluvas of Gersoppa & Haduvalli, so aren’t Marathas.
Vijayanagar Naval admiral Thimmayya Nayaka belonged to this family. 1/n
Primary source of this mistaken labelling of them as "Maratha" comes from Robert Sewell’s reasoning.
He assumed they were Marathas based on the "ja" & "ji" end of their names in Portuguese records (1st img).
He has been referenced in District Gazetteer of Goa (2nd img). 2/n
But later authors like Bhagamandala Seetharama Shastry pointed out (1st img) Portuguese commonly use 'j' instead of 'y'. So Thimmayya was written as Timoja & Timoya.
The District Gazetteer of Goa mentions how Portuguese had chronicled Timoja’s brother Sabaji as "Sabayo". 3/n
Now who were Bankapur chiefs & Thimmayya Nayaka?
They were blood relatives of Saluvas of Gersoppa/Nagire in Honnavar:
Kamoji & Appaji - The 'Gi's of Bankapur were nephews of Sabaji (Sabayo).
Sabaji was father of Saluva Malla Raya (Malharrao/Melrao in portugese records. 4/n
Sabaji was brother of Timoja (Thimmayya Nayaka).
Thimmaya was commander of Vijayanagar naval fleet & uncle of Saluva Malli Raya of Gersoppa. He was also married to a Gersoppa princess.
Saluvas were Jains.
So there is absolutely no way ANY of these people were Marathas. 5/n
Reason Marathas want to appropriate Bankapur chiefs is to show them as descendants of Kadambas of Goa & as ancestors of Marathas with Kadam surname.
Because otherwise there is yawning gap of 7 centuries after Kadambas for marathas to claim to be their legitimate descendants. 6/n
1 inscription in Orissa records a Kadambavamsi Kshatriya, Andaja & Maharashtra-kula-tilaka.
It must be understood that these were Kadambas who were planted by Chalukyas in Eastern India & "Maharashtra" referred to the Chalukyan "great rashtra". 7/n
