3 part guide for session planning
Part 3: Designing game realistic sessions
➠ 10 essential steps
1/ Playing formation
Design the sessioj in a way that reflects the formations you play and the positional movements required
E.g.
Play with a point down triangle in midfield with one holding and two No.10s which could be a shape of focus in a possession session
2/ Training block
Make sure your session is focused on your current training block:
E.g.
➠ Playing out from the back
➠ Defending high
Avoid the hamster wheel of coaching what didn't go right on game day each week.
It's hard to get off!
Stick to the long term plan
3/ Game scenarios
This is the best place to start
Look at game scenarios which regularly occur
E.g.
Man City game
Midfielders are aiming to play through the lines into a player to receive between the lines in an overloaded situation
4/ Pick & lift
Take a snippet from the scenario to then focus on
You can draw an area to demarcate the specific area of the pitch and number of players required
5/ Design your session
Now you have the blueprint, design your session from what you have chosen
You can see here is a 4v3 possession session with the attacking team in the same underloaded scenario trying to play through two units of two defenders to score in the mini-goals
6/ Player numbers
Make your session adjustable to a variation of player numbers
This session is for 7 players but it can easily work with as little as 5 and with 11 (shown here with 4 supporting players on the outside)
7/ Adjustable dimensions
Design the session for your context
E.g.
➠ Start with 16 yards x 24 yards
➠ Larger if you want greater returns for the defensive unit to close bigger gaps
➠ Smaller for attacking team to make on and off the ball movements quicker
8/ Scaffold coaching points
Have an idea of the structure of your coaching points
E.g.
4v3 possession session
15 mins
➠ 0-3 mins play and check understanding
➠ 4-9 mins establish how attackers shift the opposition
➠ 10-15 mins playing through and movement to join in
9/ Players questions
Consider the questions you can ask players using the Socratic method
➠ If this happens then what...?
➠ How would you…?
➠ When is the moment to…?
➠ Where is the…?
Help your players to discover the answers
10/ Games programme
If you are preparing for a knock out tournament you might add in specific scenarios to adjust how you will play
E.g.
➠ 2-1 up and 5 mins to go and the opposition have changed to a 1-4-2-4 formation
