noticed this anecdotally, it seems like many europeans consider the only cultural export worth considering to be high culture when that’s the sort of thing that matters the least.
America’s cultural hegemony is built on mass consumerism and business culture. It’s the language and social expectations in board rooms, not on broadway. it’s not what you buy at a supermarket, it’s that you shop there in the first place.
every major city on the planet is basically American now. it’s so ubiquitous that you don’t even notice it because you think culture is about art galleries and table manners.
this kind of gets into, I think, self conceptions of national identity and how they vary across the Atlantic.
