This is one of the Surya Pujas of Bengal. Popularly known as Maghmandala brata among East Bengalis. This is observed by kumaris & start doing vrata from the age of 4-5. This Surya Puja observed throughout the Magh mas. Surya Dev is worshipped by drawing mandala & not any murti.
On the day of the vrata, the vratinis take bath before sunrise, go to the ghat in clean clothes and chant the mantra to the sun and says in durbaghas mouth. In this vrata, through the description of Surya's marriage, the vrati expresses her wish for marriage.
When the sun rises, various songs, rhymes & stories regarding Surya Dev wearing dhuti gamcha, Surya upasana, Surya Dev's marriage, Surya Deva, going to in laws house etc. After returning home, by mixing pituli, tush, brick powder, abeer, etc. ++
++ a kind of paint is made and a circle is drawn in the center of the yard, i.e. the earth. The sun in the east and the crescent moon in the west—between these two is the circular solstice.
Each year one circle grows. This Vrata ends when five circles are completed. Human figures are drawn inside the circle. Besides, elephants, horses, sarees, jewellery, daily necessities such as combs, mirrors, plates, glasses... are also drawn. After that vratinis recite hymns.
This vow has to be observed on every Sunday of Maghmas for continuous five years. The purpose of observing this vrata is to get a good husband, in laws and son.
