A thread of various mistranslations or localization changes in Dragon Ball
๐Ÿงต
When being localized in America, Viz split up the original DB into two different manga (Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z)
This isn't like this in the Japanese version, it's just "Dragon Ball" from Pilaf to Buu
In this pic you can even still see the original volume number on Goku
When Crunchyroll was doing their simulcast of DBS, they chose to go with the dub names instead of the JP originals.
So Tien Shinhan instead of Tenshinhan, Krillin instead of Kuririn, you get the idea.
So sometimes you'll get moments like this
To add onto the last post, yes a lot of the names used in the dub are (technically) incorrect.
Vegito should be Vegetto, Buu should be Boo, Kakarot should be Kakarotto, Bulla should be Bra, you get it.
For some reason Viz's digital release of the colored manga has a lot of issues
For one it uses CMYK instead of RGB, making the colors look bland and washed out (left is original, right is CMYK)
Thanks to Tracksuit for pointing this out
If you don't know the difference between CMYK and RGB I'd recommend watching this video by Adrenaline Dubs and LandyRS
If you ever wanted to watch the original DB anime in Japanese then you'll be missing the NEPs
Nearly every Dragon Ball, Z, and GT DVD/Blu-Ray doesn't include the Next Episode Previews, so you'd miss stuff like this.
The only exception being the Dragon Boxes, which only cover Z
In DBS chapter 101, Beerus forgets what Gohan's name is.
But Viz's translation has him forgetting who Gohan is in general.
FighterZ has so many mistranslations that I could spend most of the thread talking about it, so here's just one example.
Okay now just imagine this across the whole game.
Goku's characterization in the dub was drastically changed in the dub.
For some reason making him a superman bootleg
This is true with GT too, although instead of bootleg superman he becomes a religious figure.
Despite DBS being made years later, the dub still has some issues (not as bad as the previous dubs though)
1st and 3rd pics are dub lines, 2nd and 4th pics are the sub lines
When Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2 for the first time, the dub added dialogue that wasn't there before
Here's a dub VS sub comparison.
The subs on the top are the lyrics to Spirit VS Spirit, not Gohan's dialogue.
Viz's release of DBZ doesn't contain the colored chapters from the original manga, they just badly convert them to black and white
1st pic is Viz's version and 2nd pic is what it normally looks like
Crunchy Roll and the US Blu-Ray's both removed a scene where the Grand Priest protect the Omni Kings and various characters talk during the spirit bomb
Likely done because in the US it's treated as two different episodes, but in JP it's treated as an hour long special
Various attack names were changed when dubbed
So it's Kienzan instead of destructo disc, Kikoho instead of tri-beam, and genkidama instead of spirit bomb.
Plus many more I won't mention.
A more well known fact, but still worth mentioning, is that a lot of the Dragon Ball game name's were changed for the west.
The Budokai games were just called DBZ 1, 2, and 3. Ultimate Tenkaichi is called Ultimate Blast
The dub for the Cooler movie have Cooler be very spiteful of Freeza, however he's not like this in the JP version.
Another movie dub change is the voices of movie 7.
The androids in that film all have different dialogue and accents compared to their JP counterparts.
Technically not a "localization change" but still worth putting here.
DB got a spin off manga called "That time I was reincarnated as Yamcha"
and the entire thing uses comic sans for the dialogue
The Viz version of the Dragon Ball manga has a lot of weird redraws that make the art a lot worse
1st pic is the Viz version, 2nd pic is what the original looks like
Viz changed this one line of dialogue to make Goku think Vegeta killed Grandpa Gohan.
It's only one line but it's still a weird change.
For some reason Viz makes it so Piccolo talks like he's in a Shakespeare play
Here's the Viz translation VS a fan translation
FUNimation's old dub had a bad habbit of adding in dialogue when a character is off screen
Like here when Goku is doing a whole speech in the dub but says very little in the sub
Looks like the thread is getting a bit too big rn, I'm sure I'll add more examples later but for now I'll have to end this.
To everyone saying "the mistranslation is better" that's not how translation works
When I watch/read Dragon Ball, I want Dragon Ball, not someone's rewrite or DBZ Abridged
I do expect SOME changes, since JP can't translate 1:1 with ENG, but a lot of this is unnecessary
And no, AI translations are not the solution. Using AI will just get you stuff like this which is infinitely worse.
Just hire people to do a good job, it's not that hard
