#1962war
Thread on role of field marshal Sam manekshaw in organizing the iv corps for defence of assam and NEFA just after ceasefire of 1962.
The disasterous 1962 war had completely demoralized the Indian troops and soldiers . The 4th corps headquarters in tezpur was abandoned and many citizens were evacuated during impending PLA attack.
The peoples Liberation army had came upto line joining kalkatung and chaku. Some chinese patrols were even operating south of this line . Chinese were estimated to have some 2 divisions worth troops in this area .
After declaration of unilateral ceasefire by chairman mao, tensions still remained between the IA and the PLA . There were frequent skirmishes and danger of war being restarted .
Hence during such period lt gen sam manekshaw was appointed as commander of the 4th corps and gen BM kaul was transferred to xi corps in punjab . Sam belonged to gorkha regiment was a veteran in Burma against the Japanese . He was holding the post of lt gen that time.
After being appointed sam begun rapid restructuring of 4th corps. He quickly begun Inducting new troops. His orders were clear cut and millitary like .
He had 5th division along with one and half regiment of tanks to defend assam .
He placed infantry elements at Misamari in order to defend rail and road link which was considered lifeline of assam and brahmaputra valley . The Armour elements were placed in kameng in order to destroy possible chinese attack on planes of assam.
The 181 infantry brigade was brought at charduar to cover gap between kameng and subhasri areas . A squadrone of tanks supported this deployment.
The 2 infantry division was placed in east at walong sector right upto ziro which continued to occupy its original position.
Nefa defence was further strengthened by induction of 23 division from Nagaland though it had only 1 brigade. It was deployed at tamagpur and bhairkund.
An additional squadrone of tanks was also deployed with this division.
Manekshaw made a proper study of road communications in NEFA and estimated capacity of chinese troops to built and induct troops.
He estimated that chinese supply line was completely overstretched and they would not risk keeping their troops in NEFA for Long time as winter was about to set in which would freeze the himalayan passes. Manekshaw estimated that PLA had capacity to bring upto...
400 Tonnes supply a day uptill tenga valley in kameng .. if chinese were to continue thrust down from bomdilla towards the plains of assam they could bring almost 250 tonnes . The state of road below tenga valley was worst . It passed through thick tropical forests...
And was subjected to heavy rains .
Sam estimated that the in worst case scenario PLA could mobilize about 2 inf divisions in the plains of assam . He was naturally confident to destroy the PLA if they tried to venture into plains of assam by his available forces.
However chinese PLA didn't crossed the last Ridgeline to plains of assam and commenced withdrawal from NEFA on schedule .
