Caste-based Brahmin reservations in the Delhi Sultanate:
Firuz Shah Tughlaq was a staunch Muslim ruler of the Delhi Sultanate (14th Century AD). In her enthusiasm to prove that Brahmins also paid Jizya, Sagas of Germany has lead me to this rather interesting book. - 1/n
Apparently, Brahmins had never paid Jizya, the infidel tax, in former reigns. Firuz Shah, decides that the rest of the Hindus are dependent on Brahmins, so they should pay the tax first. Fair enough! The furious Brahmins could not stand the insult and.. 2/n
. .Called upon their vedic knowledge and Gods, intending to Shaap (curse) Firuz’s mlechcha a$$ into…
..NOT!
They threatened to self-immolate and when Firuz told them to ahead, they went on indefinite hunger strike. 3/n
Then, seeing no way other than to pay Jizya, the Brahmins uttered mantras to Laxmi, their Goddess of wealth, who rained down gold coins…
…Well, that didn’t really happen. When the Brahmins grew really thin, the rest of the Hindus offered to pay their taxes for them. 4/n
Finally, Chonakya neeti was applied. After intense negotiations (The book says that the Brahmins begged to the sultan. I don’t believe it.) the Brahmins ended up paying the 3rd class of tax, which was the least tax. See, Reservations! 5/n
As you can see. Some people, who are vehemently against reservations today, enjoyed it even under Kattar Mussalman rulers in the past.
Another tidbit. Firuz’s mother was a Hindu Bhati Rajput lady, which makes him a relative of the Brahmins. In a way. 6/n
The history of India is super interesting. Instead of doing Hindu - Muslim and using it to peddle agendas, like sagas of Germany maidam does, we should learn the reality from it. n/n
