Prof GD Agarwal an environmentalist, prof IIT-Kanpur (17yrs).
He was the 1st member Secy of CPCB committed to save the River Ganga.
During the UPA regime he was on Fast for 5 times from 2008-13 which resulted in the UPA Govt scrapping a number of Hydropower projects. 2/17

Prof. GD Agarwal's relentless efforts resulted the UPA Govt agreed to declare about 135 km of the riverfront of Gaumukh to Uttarkashi as an eco-sensitive zone.
Must be noted that it was after his fast within a few days Manmohan Sing declared Ganga a National River. 3/17

His 3rd Fast in 2012 (40 days) led the Govt to call a meeting of NGBRA (National Ganga River Basin Authority).
The then CM Guj Modiji 😍 was with Prof Agarwal wholeheartedly.
After winning elec Namami Gange the project launched in May 2014 as Modijis "LIFE MISSION". 😍 4/17

Namami Gange project was given an outlay Rs. 20K crore to accomplish objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation & rejuvenation of river Ganga.
It was a granular problem.
Once it learned that cleaning up required substantial effort enthusiasm waned. 5/17

In Feb 2017 the National Green Tribunal observed that 'not a single drop of river Ganga has been cleaned so far' & that Govt efforts were 'only wasting public money'.
NGT said it does not want the “drama” regarding complaints between the Centre & Uttar Pradesh to go on. 6/17

Sept 2017, contract for the sewage treatment plant was given to Essel infrastructures for Rs 153.16 crore, a cost borne by the Govt.
It was inaugurated by MODIJI himself. Essel has no record of working in sewage treatment, but it owns several media channels. 7/17

Essel infra chairman, Subhash Chandra, earlier mentor of Sudhir Chaudhary (now in Aaj Tak) is also a former Rajya Sabha member.
In 2018 another contract for the Ram Nagar sewage treatment plant was given to the Essel group.
This situation disturbed Prof G.D. Agarwal. 8/17

After writing several letters to MODIJI and all were unanswered Prof G.D. Agarwal went on an indefinite Fast from June 22, 2018, his last Fast.
Uttarakhand govt on 10th Oct 2018 forcibly moved Agarwal to AIIMS Rishikesh, tests revealed dehydration. 9/17

From 09/10/18 Prof Agarwal gave up drinking water & finally on Oct 11 passed away.
A day before his death Nitin Gadkari said almost all Agarwal's demands had been met.
He was the Minister of the Water resources.

Allocations to Namami Gange fell from
16-17: 2500 crore
17-18: 2300 crore
18-19: 687 crore
2019-20: 375 crore was spent.
That yr the project folded into a larger one called 'Jal Shakti'. 💪🏽

Hindu report 2021 only 20% of the sewerage plant of the Rs 20,000 crore scheme was completed.
Central Pollution Control Board records 2022 show that pollution levels at 4 out of 7 sewage treatment plants in Varanasi are “not complying to the standards” of the board. 12/17

This 'Not complying' is not limited to Varanasi only.
UK Chaudhary, a former professor at IIT Varanasi, who was engaged by the government for a discussion on Ganga’s tributaries in Varanasi in 2021, called the sewage treatment plants “utterly useless”. 13/17

UK Chaudhary held the sewage treatment plants responsible for algal growth, black, dirty and smelly waters of the Ganga and called the plans of the government “bogus”.

In Sept 2022 order by the Allahabad HC critiqued the UP Pollution Control Board for its monitoring & found a “variation in results” in reports submitted by the Central Pollution Control Board & UP Board from sampling at the same spots. 😬15/17

However, in March 2020 when the lockdown led to the temporary shutdown of industrial units Modi Govt claimed the Ganga had been cleaned.
In 2022 Yogiji said Ganga is so clean that foreign diplomats were bathing in it & dolphins were reappearing. 👙🏊🏽🩲🐬

National Mission for Clean Ganga calculations are premised on sewage in the 5 States – Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand & WB through which the river courses.
This is the last wk news on 2 of these 5 states.
It is 10 yrs. According to 'Jal Shakti' Ganga is Clean now. 🙏🏽 17/17
