🧵Threat of the Air Poker arc from Usogui
First: The game.
How it works is pretty simple, the 2 people from below select 1 card with a number on it, then they bet the Bios, an air container that, as the name suggests contains the air necessary to breathe on the water tank.
After both numbers are shown the referees tell those mubers to the partners of the ones below them.
The partners are above the water tank, insade the iron maidens where they have to make a poker hand based on the number of their companion from the mind.
What's tricky about this is the fact that each round the hands that they have to make lack the cards used in the rounds from before. For example: In one round someone makes a full house with 2 fours and 3 queens on the next round those cards are prohibited
The process of making the hands must be done under 1 minute, the same time is used for the bet on the water tank.
After it's decided the winner of the round 2 things happen.
The first one is the obvious one, the winner in the tank gains the bios of the bet.
The second one happens above where the loser experiences the "Witch Pain". This punishment consists in performing extremely accurate tortures to the person's nerves, making them believe that what they're experiencing is real. The tortures are dismembering, being shot, drowning...
After this, the new round starts for both sides until the final one where the loser in the tank will drown, and for the one insade the iron maiden, they're fate will be decided by the winner.
This game is awesome because of all the thougth invested in it's creation and the mistery that it is for the first chapters of the arc.
THATS what amazes me, the way that Sako Toshio left clues to solve it for the readers while still keeping the doubts if we are correct of not.
Now onto the second point that I want to talk of.
The minor characters of the arc, Fukurou and Kaji.
Regarding Fukurou.
He is the perfect rival for Hal on this arc, since he represents the old way of Kakerou, being the last wall that Hal needs to surpass to become the one and only Leader of Kakerou.
Onto Kaji, I loved that he was the first one to notice the meaning of the cards. Also being able to give Baku a hint so that he could know the rules of the game.
All of this shows not only Kaji's development throughout the story but also his relationship with Baku and the confidence shared between the two of them.
And now the last part of the threat which it's the main characters of the arn.
Lalo, Baku and Hal/Kiruma Souichi.
Lalo has been a true menace throughout Protoporos and he has never failed my expectatives. Always being a step ahead and even when his plans failed he still found a way to turn the tables.
He's the perfect opposite of Baku. Where Baku sees his companions as true friends and people that he cares about Lalo only sees them as to what they are worth for.
This was the reason of his loss not being able to see people for how they are but their value.
And yet, he somewhat cared about them, he promised them to turn them into diamonds once they died, he even said it was not HIS loss but THEM as a team.
He even saw Baku's value and wanted him to become diamonds since that is the only goal of Ideal, the perfect cut of a diamond, achieved only by the most beutiful being.
Other things that I love about Lalo is the thrill that he showed throughout the Air Poker, meaning that even in a situation like that he was having fun too, not a as leader but as a gambler.
And leaving at his death a very powerful message.
Now onto Baku's part in this arc.
In the Air Poker Baku had 2 key moments that made him an even greater MC for the manga.
The first one clearly being the moment where he almost died but was reminded who he was. Even though it's a really simple moment it shows the importance of his friends in his life, being Kyara the one who made him come to his senses.
And Kaji being the one that he had to gamble with in his allucination, which, for me shows that deep down Baku wanted to have a match with Kaji seeing him as an equal in gambling.
And the second one being where he shows the true meaning of gamblers and how cruel they can be.
People that when they are in a game they only care about the result and themselves, nothing more.
His last moment with Lalo was amazing.
Making his rival have the most gruesome death because of all the shit he had done to him and his friends.
Thats why I love seinen manga so much, they aren't scared of having cruel characters as MC like on shonen mangas.
And now, the greatest part of the arc
Souichi Kiruma.
