We first have to understand what the โArabs meant when they described someone as Aswad (black), Ahmar (red), Abyad (white), Asmar/ฤdam (brown-dark brown).
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: โ..I have been sent to all the ahmar (red) and aswad (black)โ [Muslim] ie the non-โArabs and the โArabs
๐๐ก๐ฆ๐๐ซ (๐ซ๐๐): al-Dhahabฤซ (748ูู) in his Siyar says regarding ahmar (red): โ..it is white with reddish complexion and this rare among the (โArabs)โ This is exemplified in the Hadฤซth narrated by Zahdam describing a man from Banu Taymillฤh โ..a man from the tribe of Taymillฤh who was ahmar (red) as if he were from the non-โArab freed slavesโ [al-Bukharฤซ]. The freed slaves here refers to the Christians who were taken captive from Byzantine Syria & Rome.

It is said that the โArabs were aswad (black) because ฤdam (brown-dark brown) was the dominant color amongst them so they were considered aswad.
Abu โUbayd Al Qฤsim bin Sallฤm (224ูู) says : โThe predominant colors amongst the โArabs are sumrah/udmah (brownness-dark brownness), and the predominant colors amongst the non โArabs are byฤd (whiteness) and humrah (redness).โ [Ghraฤซb al-Hadฤซth]
Ibn โAbd al-Barr (463ูู)says: โal-udmah (brownness-dark brownness) is the color of the โArabs and it is al-sumrah (swarthiness/darkness) in menโ [al-Istidhkฤr]
al-Rฤghib al-Isfahฤnฤซ (502ูู) says: โ..and many from amongst the human species are red-complexioned so they were called that just as the non-โArabs were called โredโ, and the โArabs were called โblackโ because the majority of them were as suchโ [Tafsฤซr al-Isfahฤnฤซ]

So the question is if the majority of โArabs were considered aswad (black) then why are there so many who fall under the abyad (wheatish white) or even humrah (red) category today?

โ..because of the conquests and the expansion of slave markets at the time, and the rise of the economic status of the โArabs in Islam over what it was in the pre-Islamic times which enabled them to marry beautiful foreign โwhiteโ women and prefer them over โblackโ women.โ
