There are 2 categories of Navratri: Gupta Navratri & Prakat Navratri.
Magha & Ashad Navratris are both known as Gupt Navratris, while Sharad & Chaitra Navratri are known as Prakat Navratris.
Gupta Navratris are relatively lesser known & are not celebrated on a large scale.
Instead of social celebrations, Gupt Navratri is observed with spiritual austerities that require the Sadhaks to spend some time in solitude so that they can look inwards & connect with Divine energy
Period of Gupt Navratri is highly mystical & hence extremely powerful & potent.
Magha Navratri :
Magha Navaratri is a Gupt Navratri & is dedicated to the esoteric & mystical practices of worshipping the Divine Feminine energy.
It holds immense spiritual significance. It is celebrated in the month of Magha, which typically falls in January or February.
Ashada Navratri :
Just like Magha Navratri, Ashada Navratri is also a Gupt Navratri its also known as Gayatri Ashad Navratri.
Ashadha Gupt Navratri will start on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month. It typically falls in the months of June or July.
Sharad or Shardiya Navratri :
Sharad Navratri is the most widely known celebrated one. Its an Prakat Navratri & also known as Maha Navratri.
Sharad Navratri takes place in the month of Ashwin during the Autumn season, usually in the months of September or October.
Chaitra Navratri :
Chaitra Navratri is celebrated in the spring season, usually in March or April. As per the Hindu calendar, Chaitra is the first month of the year Chaitra Navratri is a Prakat Navratri.
This Navratri also Known as Vasanta Navratri
Regardless of the type of Navratri, generally we worship 9 forms of Maa Durga in 9 days.
Let's understand the 9 forms of Maa Durga and the mantras to worship them.
On the first day Devi Shailaputri is worshipped
She is called the daughter of the mountain (Shaila= Mountain, Putri= Daughter) With a half-moon on the forehead, trident in the right hand and a Lotus in the left, she is mounted on Nandi.

1. Om Devi Shailputryai Swaha
2. Vande Vanchhit Laabhaay, Chandrardhkritshekharaam | Vrisharudham Shooldharaam Shailputriim Yashaswinim ||
On the 2nd day, Devi Brahmacharini is worshipped.
She is the unmarried form of Devi Parvati, considered the absolute reality of the universe (Brahma= the supreme consciousness, charini= the female version of charya or the one who behaves)
Adorned in white attire with a Japa Mala in right hand & Kamandala in the left, she signifies loyalty and wisdom

2. Dadhaanaa Kar Padmaabhyaamakshmala Kamandaloo | Devi Prasidatu Mayi Brahmcharinyanuttamaa||
On the 3rd Day Devi Chandraghanta is worshipped
As Devi Parvati adorned her forehead with the crescent moon, she was called Maa Chandraghanta.
With her 10 arms (Dash Bhuja), she is a symbol of courage and valor. She is a fierce form of Devi Parvati, she is calm until provoked

On 4th Day Devi Kushmanda is Worshipped
Devi Kushmanda Also known as Ashtabhuja Devi holding a bow, a jar of nectar arrow lotus, mace, discus chakra
she blesses her devotees with health wealth & strength She resides inside the core of the sun and is the creator of the universe
Mantras to Worship Devi Kushmanda:
1. Om Devi Kushmandayayi Namah
2. Suraasampoorna Kalasham Rudhiraaplutamev Cha | Dadhaanaa Hastpadmaabhyaam Kushmanda Shubhdaastu Me ||
On the fifth day, Devi Skandhmata is worshipped.
The Mother carrying baby Skandh (Kartikeya) who sits on a lotus is known as Goddess Padmasana.
She is portrayed riding a furious lion with child Kartikeya & Abhaya Mudra in another right hand

1. Om Devi Skandmatayayi Namah
2. Sinhaasangataam Nityam Padmaanchit Kardwayaa | Shubhdaastu Sadaa Devi Skandmata Yashaswini ||
On the sixth day, Devi Katyayni is worshipped.
She is a warrior as she killed Mahishasur, hence she is called โ€˜Mahishasur Mardiniโ€™. Draped in red attire, she rides a majestic lion.
She is one of highly revered forms of Goddess Durga & is known to destroy evil.
On the 7th day, Devi Kaalratri is worshipped.
She depicts a violent form of Devi Parvati, her name means Kaalโ€™ - time/death & โ€˜Ratriโ€™ - night or the โ€˜Destroyer of the Darknessโ€™.
She is depicted with dark blue or black complexion with 4 hands, bountiful hair & rides on a donkey.
Mantras to Worship Devi Kalratri:
1. Om Devi Kalratryayi Namah
2. Ekveni Japakarnpoora Nagna Kharaasthita | Lamboshthi Karnika karni Tailaabhyaktshariirini ||
Vaam Paadollasallohlata Kantakbhushanaa Bardhan Moordham Dhwajaa Krishnaa Kalratrirbhayankari ||
On the 8th day, Devi Mahagauri is worshipped.
She Known for fulfilling all wishes of her devotees
She is depicted riding ull with 4 hands. She carries Trishul in 1 right hand & Abhaya Mudra in 2nd right hand She adorns Damaru in 1st left hand & Varada Mudra in 2nd left hand

1. Om Devi Mahagauryayi Namah
2. Shwete Vrishesamarudha Shwetaambardhara Shuchih | Mahagauri Shubham Dadyanmahadev Pramodadaa ||
On the 9th day, Devi Siddhidatri is worshipped.
She is a giver, known for removing ignorance & imparting knowledge to realize the eternal power, which is running the entire cosmos.
She sits on Kamal & depicted with 4 hands, caring Gada, Chakr, alotus flower & Shankh
Mantras to Worship Devi Siddhidatri :
1. Om Devi Siddhidatryayi Namah
2. Siddha Gandharva Yakshdyairasurairamarairapi | Sevyamaanaa Sadabhuyaat Siddhida Siddhidayini ||
Nine days of Navratri are considered to be the time for Sadhana and awakening one's sleeping power. Sadhana means developing inner energy by controlling your senses, desire and mind.
Many people observe fasting during Navratri according to their physical capacity and willpower.
