Matrikas (Sanskrit: mฤtแนkฤs, เคฎเคพเคคเฅƒเค•เคพ, โ€œThe Mothersโ€), are a group of Goddesses who are always depicted together as 8 Divine Mothers
Names of Ashtamatrikas :
Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshvari, Indrani, Kaumari, Varahi ,Chamunda & Narasimhi.
Let's understand about their origin
Shiva's battle with Andhakasur & AshtaMatrikas:
The story of Andhakasura is repeated in variations in Varaha Purana Matsya Purana Shiva Purana & Linga Purana
Asper Matsya Purana chapter 189 Shiva created many Matrikas during battle with Andhakasur to drink blood of Andhakasur
According to Varaha Purana -chapter 27 out of Shiva's anger, when he, dancing in fury, raised the pierced Andhaka above him.
A flame came out of his mouth, from which Yogeshvari manifested.
From the other Devas, the corresponding seven goddesses manifested.
According to Shiva Purana Anhakasura with his army came to Mount Mandara to take away most beautiful woman in the world Maa Parvati
Asper Rudra Samhita Yudhha Khand Chapter-45: Brahma Vishnu Indra Yama & other gods took feminine form to protect Parvati, & they are Matrikas
According to Rudra Samhita Yudhha Khand Chapter 46 of Shiva Purana
During the war between Shiva &Andhakasur, Vishnu appeared from the ears of Shiva in a feminine form to drinking blood of Andhakasur
Probably this is Yogeshvari; however, her name is not mentioned in Shiva Purana
Again According to Uma Samita of Shiva purana, chapter 50
During the war between Maa Parvati and Durgam, 10 Mahavidyas appeared along with many Matrikas to help Maa Parvati in the war. However, there is no mention of their names.
According to Suprabheda Agama Saptamatrikas were created by Brahma to destroy the demon Nirrita.
It gives a short description of these 7 Matrikas

Association of Matrikas with Adi Parashakti
According to "Devi-Mahatmya", Matrikas emerged from the bodies of the male Gods (Vishnu, Shiva, Indra, etc.) as their Shaktis to help Durga on the battlefield with the Asuras
"Devi Bhagavata Purana" mentions ten Matrikas who helped Chamunda in the battle against Raktabija: Kali, Brahmani, Maheshvari, Vaishnavi, Indrani, Varahi, Narasimha, Shiva Duti, Kaumari, Varuni (Book Five, chapter 28 Verse 13-33).
In Durga Saptshati of Markandeya Purana those Shaktis of devas that emerged as their feminine forms are all forms of Devi Kaushik & they all dissolve in her the Kaushik tells her reality to Shumbha in the 10th chapter.
So AllMatrikas are incarnations of Adi Parashakti or Durga
There is huge confusion and controversy about numbers of Matrikas.
Some days have 7 Saptamatrics, and some say 8 Ashtamatrika. You can find a wide variety of variations with numbers from 5 to 10 or even more
Out of All Matrikas, 8 Ashtamatrika are the most important.

Significance of Matrikas :
The Matrikas has a paramount significance in Atharva Veda
They are โ€œdescribed as assisting the great Shakta Devi (goddess) in her fight with demons.โ€ They are also connected with the worship of warrior god Skanda.
The Cosmic Shakti works through these ancient mothers [ AshtaMatrikas]to uncover existing limitations of our chitta [ Mind Stuff], so that an individual can move through them with guidance into yogic or tantric processes.
This is a brief thread about Matrikas, the divine mothers.
This time I am not going to give worshiping procedures and mantras of Matrikas here because worshiping these Matrikas is not everyone's cup of tea.
Stay tuned for the next thread about 64 Yoginis.
