You must have heard of Cebu city in the Philippines -now a 100% Catholic country
But how many of you knew that it was ruled by Hindu Chola Rajas for centuries before Ferdinand Magellan landed in 1521?
Thread on kingdom started by Half Chola Half Malay Sri Lumay in 1400 CE
Historical records reveal that the prince, known as Sri Lumay or Rajamuda Lumaya, arrived in the Philippines from Sumatra, bringing with him the rich cultural heritage of the Chola dynasty and Malay archipelago.
His vision laid the foundation for a Hindu kingdom in Cebu
The Rajahnate of Cebu thrived as a Hindu polity, with its society and governance deeply influenced by Hindu traditions and beliefs.
Temples dedicated to Hindu deities dotted the landscape, serving as centers of worship and cultural expression.
Under the leadership of Sri Lumay and his descendants, the Rajahnate of Cebu flourished, establishing trade networks and diplomatic relations with neighboring polities.
Its strategic location made it a pivotal hub for maritime commerce in the region.
The kingdom reached its zenith during the reign of Rajah Humabon, who welcomed the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.
Despite initial cordiality, tensions arose, culminating in the Battle of Mactan, where local forces led by Lapu-Lapu repelled the Spanish invaders.
With the arrival of Spanish missionaries and the spread of Christianity, the indigenous religious practices of the Rajahnate of Cebu gradually waned.
Hindu temples fell into disuse, and the cultural landscape of the kingdom underwent profound transformation.
Today, archaeological excavations and historical research continue to shed light on the complex history of the Rajahnate of Cebu, offering insights into the interplay of cultures and civilizations in the Philippines, a poignant chapter in Southeast Asian history.
