"𝐈 𝐟𝐞𝐞π₯ 𝐑𝐞π₯𝐩π₯𝐞𝐬𝐬!"
As an Academy Coach I’ve lost 100s of times..
…but one experience taught me more than I could have learnt on my UEFA B Licence…
A 5-0 loss to Chelsea at U15s
➠ Here’s why…
↓
1. The No.4 dropped between the centre back and fullback to receive the ball
Too slow on the press and we would get played around 3v2.
Coordinated in our press but we still got played around in a 4v3.
Dropped off and the No.4 played through us.
2. The No.9 and wingers both made runs into the same channels between a centreback and fullback
This cut off both their recovery runs leaving overloads at the back post or finishing opportunities in the half space inside the 18 yard area.
3. Their physical capabilities were superior to ours
We couldn’t keep up with their pace or strength which left a conundrum of whether to press high to stem the build up or drop deep to deny space in behind.
4. Half-time I had no answers
We were technically and physically outmatched.
As a coach you need to make sure you still give hope and your players to find confidence again to compete and also appreciate the learning experience.
5. A New half 0-0
Renewed hope comes with drawing a line in the sand and looking forward
What’s your second half you’ve had to draw the line with?
6. Praise
Recognising effort and positive intentions cannot be underestimated and many a time can go further than the details of specific tactics.
7. Reflections
Making sure that the experience is not wasted and key takeaways emotionally, technically and tactically
What character development and positive perspective impact was done.
