This is Vincent Dransfield.
He's 110 years old, still drives a car, walks up stairs, and has less health issues than his grandchildren.
He also doesn't workout, eats burgers, and drinks alcohol on occasion.
Here are his secrets to longevity:
Vincent is considered to be a supercentenarian, which is a human who is 110 years or older.
Only 1 out of every 1000 centenarians are supercentenarians.
Only 10% of them are men.
What makes Vincent special is that he's still living independently.
Lesson #1 - It's not just about quantity. It's about quality.
Vincent still has a fit mind & body
He can still drive his car & walk up & down stairs without help.
Aside from achy knees & other minor issues, he's lived a long life while being both mentally & physically healthy.
Lesson #2 - He doesn't workout but remains active.
He was 21 years old when he joined the fire department & has kept moving since then,
He's never lifted or jogged. He just kept moving.
His granddaughter says he laughs at people who jog saying,
"Where are they running to?"
Lesson #3 - Strong social bonds
When asked what brings him happiness & keeps him going he quickly answers:
"The fire department. … I met so many friends.”
He's part of the β€œ3 to 5 club” where he still goes to the fire department & hangs with his buddies every day.
Lesson #4 - A Positive Mindset & Faith
Dransfield is an optimist, has a great sense of humor & knows everyone's name in town.
"Knowing & loving people makes me live longer"
He keeps a positive attitude regardless of the situation & is deeply rooted in his faith.
Lesson #5 - Enjoy what you eat
Vincent's never had to lose weight & still enjoys pasta, hamburgers, milk chocolate & beer.
The key is that his job & lifestyle have always kept him fit.
He also drinks a lot of milk, buys his meals from a restaurant in town & microwaves them.
Lesson #6 - It's never too late to fix a bad habit
He started smoking at 50 years old & 20 years later he decided to quit.
As per his granddaughter:
β€œHe told me one day that he was going to stop smoking. He threw the cigarettes out & that was it. He just never smoked again.”
There may also be a heavy element of luck & genetics happening underneath the surface.
He's never had to deal with any major illnesses or severe falls.
In his words,
β€œI’ve been very, very, very lucky in my lifetime”
My observations:
Β· Being active in any way is better than not being active
Β· Having a strong community is a massive benefit to longevity
Β· Like Vince, almost every centenarian I've studied has admitted to having a positive mindset
Vince seems like he's enjoying life & has the demeanour of someone I'd like to emulate if I hit 110 years old.
