Delegation is an ART.
But everyone does it differently.
- Jensen Huang has 50 direct reports
- Elon Musk has 20+ direct reports
- Jeff Bezos has 10 direct reports
Here’s what the world’s Top leaders think about delegation 👇 🧵
They have a combined net worth of $457 Billion.
They run 3 of the biggest companies on earth→ Tesla, Amazon & Nvidia have a massive cumulative market cap of $4.5 Trillion!
Every second counts in their world.
Let's dive into how they’ve cracked this art👇
1./ Jensen Huang:
He has 50 execs reporting to him.
Why?
As per him, the CEO should:
- Have the most insight into what's going on in the company
- Share all information with everyone at the same time
Flatter Org. → More Access → More Empowerment → More Agility
Nvidia is one of the world's largest companies with only 30,000 employees. Apple has ~1,65,000.
Jensen's focus = Have small teams for better delegation & focus.
From interns to managers, everyone attends the same meetings.
This means he trusts his employees and creates a sense of team accountability.
Nvidia has some of the best management teams in the world.
Have an Intrinsically Inspired Team → Create Impact
Loved his quote "There's no task beneath me".
Nothing makes him feel inferior.
He tries to serve his teams actively.
2./ Elon Musk:
His inability to delegate leads to micromanagement.
Musk calls it - "Attention to detail"
"If you're trying to make a perfect product, attention to detail is essential."
Walter Isaacson - the writer of Musk's biography, reveals this in detail 👇
He follows the principle of "skip-level" meetings.
Instead of meeting managers, he prefers meeting folks one level down.
Musk works 100+ hours/per week because he believes in "careful delegation".
In a 2020 interview with NYT, he said, "I can't find people to delegate to".
Isaac says that he is NOT a team player.
Musk will override any decision that could potentially cause harm.
He is bold about his visions, attracting world-class talent willing to work with him.
3./ Jeff Bezos:
Bezos has established a system for optimal decision-making.
He defines 2 types of decisions:
i.) Type 1 - Irreversible decisions that are strategic
ii.) Type 2 - Everyday operational decisions that are reversible
He wants the time to make quality decisions.
Delegating tasks breeds accountability and control.
It also means spreading the impact of stress.
Empowering individuals = Delegate Stress
Amazon has 14 core working principles.
A simple yet powerful example is his Day 1 thinking.
'Treat every day as if it were Day 1'
He is also big on Disagree & Commit.
When you disagree & commit, you are encouraged to disagree but then commit once a decision has been made.
Bezos trusts his team members in such disagreements, believing they are closer to the on-ground situation.
That's a wrap!
