The job of the coach is to have a clear vision of the game and to communicate that idea to the players.
Everything we do starts here - with a vision of the game.
But how can we start developing a clear of style of play? ⬇️
Why do we need a clear Game Model?
In the past, sailors at sea used the brightest star (the North Star) to help them find their way.
This is what every coach needs: A clear direction for the development process of our team and players. Every action should be a step toward our North Star.
"What is the job of a football head coach or manager?
To have a clear idea of how my team should play.
This can be more the Pep Guardiola style, or the Diego Simeone style, or the Hansi Flick style, or the Jürgen Nagelsmann style, or the Jürgen Klopp style. Those are variations, different areas, where Pep Guardiola is more the kind of coach who likes technical players, whereas Jürgen Kopp more likes the “heavy metal band” players.
But what they all have in common is that they exactly know how this kind of football they want to play looks like. They have in their brains the video of the perfect game. They have it in their minds. And the job of the football manager is to transform this Idea of football into the heads, hearts, brains, and veins of your players."
Ralf Rangnick. The Coaches Voice.
If you don't have a big vision, it's easy to fall into the trap of focusing on our opponent.
But our goal is to build an undeniably good system. We want to have a strong team that is independent of the opponent. I wrote more about this here:
a) Look at what excites you
What are the teams you enjoy watching? These teams are your starting point.
Take an idea that already works. For example, do you like the way Liverpool press? Then take that idea and try to replicate it. Why?
- You have a clear model. You know it works. If they can do it, you can do it.
-When you run into problems, you can see how they solve them.
That is how I started. As you try to implement these ideas, you learn that it is not easy at all. Along the way, you learn all the details your players need to execute these ideas. You learn the principles and the best exercises to teach your idea.
b) Your vision is a moving target.
It doesn't have to be more than an idea at first. You need just need a target.
It helps you to prioritize. Every action and every practice is to get one step closer to that goal. What do my players need to execute my ideas? What exercises will help me communicate my vision?
But your vision of football is a moving target. The closer you get to your target, the more ideas you will generate. Your "perfect" vision of football changes over time. You will see your North Star more clearly each year.
PS: I help coaches develop their vision of football.
