I found a woman who worked for 10+ years as an “end-of-life” nurse.
She asked 100s of patients the biggest regrets they had on their deathbed.
Oddly enough…they all had similar answers.
Here were the top 5 most common:
(So you don’t make the same mistakes)
This comes from Bronnie Ware & her book:
"The Top Five Regrets of the Dying"
If you don't want to read the book...
Here were the top 5 regrets:
5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
What stands out to me about these regrets?
None of these people wish they:
• Worked harder
• Made more money
• Climbed the corporate ladder
Which reminds me of this video of a 70 year old women talking about her regrets & things that she realized aren’t important:
Instead, these people who have 2 weeks or less to live…
Wish they had:
• Worked less
• Lived how they wanted to
• Focused on family & relationships
& of course, valued their time more.
So…
How can you avoid having regrets like these?
Here’s how I’m doing it:
Buying back my time.
I’m doing this at 34 so I can watch my 7 month old & 2.5 year old daughters grow up.
I want to be there for every moment.
& if I was working my old 9-5 job…
That wouldn’t have been possible.
So instead, I’m investing in things like:
Vending machines.
While I’m spending my time with my daughters at the park, playing dress up or playing sports…
These machines will make money on autopilot.
All I need to do is stock them once a week.
So far, this has been life-changing…
Quit my 9-5 job 4 years ago & now working only a few hours a week.
I spend the majority of my time now:
• With my family
• Focusing on my health
• Pursuing things I’m passionate about (like golf😅)
My goal is to live a life now that I’ll have 0 regrets when I’m 80+.
& I think this is the best way to do it.
What are you doing now to avoid regret when you're older?
