In wars waged by man, it's the women of the country who must endure the savagery of war and the barbarism of men.
A thread on the sexual abuse of women and children during the Tamil Genocide:
Violence against women and children began in Sinhalese civilian led riots and progoms.
Post the riots in May 1958, where notably a Brahmin Priest was burned alive and civilians killed in riots, the large scale rape of women began.
Sri Lanka's war camps held women and children for questioning. Routinely, women were called in for "questioning" and left as victims.
Interview with a survivor narrating her experiences.
After taking her Chemistry A-Level exam, 16 year old Krishanti was returning home when she was abducted by Sri Lankan Soldiers.
she was raped 6 times.
her mother, family friend and brother Pranavan who went out to search for her.
Her mother and friend were found with ropes tied around their necks.
Sister and brother were found slaughtered, with pieces of their body wrapped in black sheets.
In the 1990s, Tamil women in Sr Lanka were being so frequently raped in army camps after being taken in for questioning by the Sri Lankan Army, that neighbours reported being able to hear it day in and out.
The army later cremated their bodies, alive and dead.
1999: Ida Carmelita, a 19 year old tamil girl, was gang raped and killed by five men who broke into her mother's house at night after tying up the family.
her breasts and lips were bitten, and there was a gun shot through her vagina.
The bullets correspond to those usually used by the army, according to forensic experts.
Her lawyer was killed during prosecution.
Men "suspected of terrorist affiliations" were also held in camps, sexually tortured and raped by the SLA.
They were then forced to sign documents in Sinhala, a language they did not understand, under duress.
Towards the final years of the war, in 2005, Tharsini Ilayathamby was on her way to her aunt's home. the next morning, her body was found completely naked in an abandoned well near the Sri Lankan Navy camp.
she was brutally raped before being strangled to death. Several injuries caused by fingernails were found on her neck, and one of her breasts were bitten severely.
in the final days of the war, sexual abuse was rampant, of both the dead and alive. Most notably, a Tamil woman, Isaipriya, was found captured, stripped and possibly rapes, and killed by Sri Lankan Military, post conclusion of the war.
Videos of Sri Lankan Military personnel have been found, commenting crudely, suggestive of Sexual Abuse.
Video of the SLA rounding up bodies, those of women suspiciously stripped.
Throughout the war, it's been noted that very few, if any of the cases against the SLA were properly prosecuted if given attention at all. Army commanders allowed their troops "free reign" to do as they pleased, so long as they didn't get caught.
In 2000, eight Tamil civilians were killed as they returned to their homes to salvage belongings by Sunil Ratnayake. He was condemned and sentenced to death by law.
President Rajapaksa pardoned him in 2020, in an open support of his country's war crimes against the Tamil people.
The SLA, between 1950-2009, murdered between 150000-250000 thousand civilians according to reports, with a reported 12,437 women raped.
the resistant force LTTE, that was fought against is often referred to by the SLA as the most brutal, ruthless terrorist organisation of all time.
with a confirmed 4000 civilian casualties victims and none confirmed of rape or sexual assault.
No, war doesn't have to mean rape.
Today is May 18, the final day of the Tamil Genocide.
Today is May 18, Mullivaikkal remembrance day.
Today is also May 18, Sri Lanka's Victory Day.
The perpetrators of rape are today commemorated as war heroes. its time to ask-
what constitutes their "heroism"?
Who are your heroes?
In a country where criminals known for the most abhorrent of behaviour are pardoned by heads of state, a country whose army is now infamous for the rape of Haitian children, it's time to ask-who are you celebrating?
In a state that indiscriminately murdered civilians and prisoners, indiscriminately tortured civilians and militants, and in a state that still oppresses the Tamil populace in the North and East, arresting those who serve their traditional dishes as remembrance, it's time to ask-
What ARE you celebrating?
