Most people can't remember more than 50% of what they learn after 1 week.
Here's are 8 strategies to use so you never forget again.
1. Start with why.
Before diving into learning, ask yourself WHY you need to learn this. Understanding the purpose helps your brain prioritize and store information better. It's not just about passing a test; it's about enriching your life!
2. Focus on the Big Ideas
Identify the key concepts or β€œbig ideas” of what you’re learning.
This helps you
- outline the information
- identify important concepts.
- get a taste of what's coming
Think of it as sketching out a blueprint before building a house.
3. Break It Down
Divide complex information into smaller, manageable chunks.
Our brains process and remember small pieces of information better than large ones.
It's like eating a pizza--slice by slice πŸ•
4. Mix It Up
Use different methods to learn.
- read books
- watch videos
- teach someone
- sketch it out.
- GPT it
This is multimodal learning.
It reinforces memory by engaging different parts of your brain. Variety is the (cajun) spice of learning.
5. Space It Out
Review what you’ve learned after several days, instead of all at once.
This is known as spaced practice.
It's like watering a plant. A little every day, not all at once. Unless you want it to drown. 🌱
6. Teach Others
When you teach something, you get to learn it twice.
Teaching allows you to
- discover gaps in your knowledge.
- help someone else (be nice)
- build credibility and good will
7. Take Breaks
Your brain needs downtime to process and sort the new information. This is known as consolidation.
Optimize for 8 hours of sleep each night.
Take short breaks from learning every hour.
8. Learn What You WANT to Learn
If you are curious, you will learn. You'll seek truth. You'll immerse yourself.
The more interested you are about a topic, the easier it is to learn and remember.
Thanks for reading.
