I thought I would spend days on this lit review.
It took me just 10 minutes (no joke)!
Here is how and what tool I used:
πŸ‘‡
My Topic:
I am figuring out how forests react to climate change in New Zealand.
The big question: Who has done it before?
(A vast literature review question that can take hours)
Googling it, I found only a single paper: [Wardle 1992]
Really!?
To check if there is really only one paper, I searched for this paper [Wardle 1992] on @LitmapsApp ...
[Wardle 1992] seemed to be already connected to my other papers on Litmaps.
Especially [Taheri 2021].
πŸ€”This was strange as I just read it and it did not mention anything New Zealand specific nor [Wardle 1992]....
So I looked into the [Taheri 2021] paper and [Wardle 1992] was mentioned only in the references.
It was not referenced in the main text!
Why?
β†’ Taheri 2021 is a global meta review and they mention every used study, but don't describe them in detail in the text.
So I downloaded the supplementary materials.
Taheri 2021 didn't at all mention what was in there!
πŸ† For me, this was a treasure. πŸ†
It mentioned every study I would need for my discussion with additional information.
Lit Review Done in 10 minutes.
This process found the research gap for me!
β†’ In 10 minutes I realized: there are no studies on what I am doing in New Zealand!
My research will be novel and important! πŸŽ‰
Summary:
This is just my personal story on how I found the research gap.
The takeaway here is that tools like @LitmapsApp can find connections that are virtually invisible.
(Other learning: Always check the supplementary materials 🀣!)
Litmaps is an all-in-one tool for lit reviews and can do much more than this.
Here is my favorite use case:
