7 neuroscience facts that explain why your brain is sabotaging your success.
The real reason you're stuck:
1. The Default Mode Network (DMN) is sabotaging your success.
When you're not focusing on a task, the DMN picks up the slack.
It's linked to:
◦ Anxiety
◦ Depression
◦ ADHD
◦ Daydreaming
◦ Can't complete work on time
When you're not focused, DMN uncontrollably fires.
2. The problem with dopamine
Dopamine reinforces neural pathways that keep you coming back to pleasurable activities.
You say: "I'll just check social media for 5 minutes."
But your brain says: "Why not half an hour?"
Turn off notifications and remove the temptation.
3. Freaking out doesn't help.
Stress and panic trigger your amygdala.
When the amygdala takes over, you can't use your prefrontal cortex.
Solution: feel gratitude. It reduces stress and worry.
4. Fear of failure keeps you from success.
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) fires when you anticipate errors.
Get rid of fear by breaking down goals.
Break them down into mini-goals so you're not overwhelmed.
5. Fear of success is real too.
The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) processes positive emotions.
It also processes fear.
The idea of being successful is unknown and scary for your brain.
Visualize the perfect outcome. Your brain will believe it's attainable.
6. Multitasking is a lie.
When you multitask:
◦ Your prefrontal cortex switches between tasks
◦ You make more mistakes
◦ You take longer to finish tasks
Focus on ONE task at a time.
7. The gap between knowing and doing.
Your brain has a hard time differentiating between the two.
Thinking about a task makes it feel like you've accomplished it.
Solution: plan and set small, actionable goals.
Then you can shift your focus to getting them done.
Don't let your brain sabotage your success. Use neuroscience to your advantage.
