πŸ’Š GAME SITUATIONS πŸ’Š
A short player can attain the same or a higher vertical reach than a taller one. To do this, he has to jump higher. To jump higher, he needs greater force. To generate such force, he needs to gather sufficient momentum. For that, he needs time & space.
Now, there are about five game situations from which aerial opportunities can be produced;
β€”from long goal-kicks.
β€”from long passes and clearances.
β€”from bouncing[2nd] balls.
β€”from crosses into the box.
β€”from set-pieces.
For the first two, due to the relatively long period the ⚽ spends in the air, and the reduced compactness of both teams, the contesting players have both time & space to gather enough momentum to get set [posture & position] and contest either in air or on ground.
For bouncing balls, time is significantly reduced, but there is still space to gather momentum.
However, for set-pieces and crosses into the box, the reduced time & space make it difficult to gather momentum and generate sufficient force to reliably contest.
This is where tall players have strong advantages, as they have less need of momentum to contest [jump or not].
So, while shorter players can reliably contest in large spaces for aerial balls that spend long periods in the air, they are significantly disadvantaged in the box, and in set-piece situations.

πŸ’Š THE CODA πŸ’Š
Γ— Of the 3 aforementioned facets, the one that is easiest to improve and in which significant improvements can be made is the technical capacity, followed by the mental, then the physical.
Thus, when looking to raise the squad’s aerial duelling capacity, clubs..
are more likely to target players with significant physical advantages, even if they are not solid in aerial contests.
Γ— A team that does not have at least 5 solid [and tall!] aerial duellers isn’t a serious one β€”Silva’s LawπŸ˜‘.
Γ— Tall β‰  better dueller but it is safer to be so.
Γ— For United fans dreaming of a Neves-Kobbie combo, I think it’s impractical and unideal with Bruno as the 3rd MF, and Lisandro and Shaw in the backline.
