In the 1980s, psychologist Benjamin Bloom examined 100+ experts.
He found 3 stages in childhood for future experts:
Stage 1:
Children are introduced to their field in a playful way
Bloom found:
β€’ Children get interests from their parents
β€’ Parents instill hard work and valuable use of time
β€’ Experts often have older siblings they learn from
Stage 2:
Getting serious
Bloom found:
β€’ Future experts then take lessons from teacher and engage in deliberate practice
β€’ Parents encourage and help develop routines
β€’ After 2-5 years, kids start to tie identity more to skills, less to school and social life
Stage 3:
Commitment
Bloom found:
β€’ Future experts then seek out the best teachers
β€’ Do everything they can to improve
β€’ Family supports practice for 4-5 hours a day
However, there's a level beyond...
Bonus Stage 4:
Making creative contributions
Bloom found:
β€’ Future transcendent experts move beyond teachers
β€’ Have a mental model to modify performance.
β€’ Creativity is linked to maintaining long-term focus
What does this teach us?
1. Expertise comes from within, not from force.
2. Exposure and support are the best things to give kids
3. Creativity emerges from fundamental mastery
