The recycle code you see on your plastic cup is NOT A RANDOM NUMBER.
I bet YOU are ingesting some DANGEROUS plastics…
[BOOKMARK THIS] ↓
Every plastic object you purchase such as your Starbucks order, water bottles, or frozen dinner will have a recycle code on it.
Don’t believe me? Go check quickly...
These codes can give us clues on the plastic's level of TOXICITY!
This post will be ranking the 7 main plastics found in everyday items from MOST HARMFUL to LEAST HARMFUL.
I hope you’re ready for some fun.
1. Code 3 (Polyvinyl Chloride, aka PVC)
The MOST HARMFUL of the plastics.
It has been associated with the following chemicals↓
• Lead
• Dioxins
• Vinyl Chloride
• Phthalates
The above chemicals are linked to the following health issues↓
• Hormonal issues
• Infertility
• Liver toxicity
• Respiratory effects
• Increased canc$r risk
• Neurological problems
2. Code 6 (Polystyrene)
Styrofoam is a kind of polystyrene.
Polystyrene has been linked to↓
• Hearing loss
• Immune system disruption
• Severe cellular damage
• Neurotoxicity
• Kidney damage
3. Code 7 (Other)
This includes BPAs, BPFs, BPSs, and phthalates.
Anything with code 7 is known to leach the MOST plastics.
Some issues that may arise↓
• Infertility
• Kidney damage
• Behavioral disorders
• Cardiovascular problems
• Hormonal issues
4. Code 1 (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
This is one of the most popular ones.
It leaches a ton and has harmful chemicals such as phthalates and antimony trioxide (a potential carcinogen).
Hormonal issues and cytotoxicity are a possibility with these chemicals.
5. Code 4 (Low-Density Polyethylene, LDPE)
This is where we can begin to breathe a little.
However, be careful as anything with code 4 can have nonylphenol, a known endocrine disruptor.
6. Code 5 (Polypropylene)
Anything with code 5 is generally on the safer end.
Oligomers are present in here, although there effects are more unknown at the current moment and we need more research here.
7. Code 2 (High-Density Polyethylene, HDPE)
The LEAST HARMFUL of the plastics.
It leaches minimally and is much more tolerable in comparison to the others.
This is not something to get neurotic about.
However, our awareness of these things is imperative in today’s environment.
It’s important to be smart when we use plastics.
Don’t microwave them.
Don’t bring your Starbucks cup into the sauna.
Don’t drink steaming hot coffee in a styrofoam cup.
