In 2019, Yogi Adityanath was sad that NCR citizens had to struggle with traffic in & out of Delhi Airport
So he set out to build an international airport near Noida
The crazy part? It's going to be Asia's largest & world's 4th largest airport!
THREAD: here’s the master plan🧵
Noida International Airport (NIA) is being constructed in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh — to the south of Greater Noida.
The Airport has a 4 phase master plan to handle 70 million passengers annually when it is fully developed.
After the completion of its first phase, the NIA will have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers.
And it will begin its operations with 65 daily flights by the end of 2024:
→ 62 Domestic Flights
→ 2 Foreign Destinations (Dubai, Singapore)
→ 1 Cargo Carrier
The airport will be linked to Greater Noida via metro line and will have a station on the Delhi-Varanasi High Speed Rail (bullet train) project.
In 2019, Flughafen Zürich AG, the operator of Zurich Airport in Switzerland won the bid to build and operate the airport for 40 years.
NIA is being developed through a public-private partnership model (PPP) where the Zurich Airport AG will operate and manage the airport, through its subsidiary Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL).
And Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) is the implementing agency on behalf of the Government of UP.
YIAPL has selected TATA Projects as the Civil Construction Contractor to construct the airport’s terminal, runway, airside infrastructure, roads and other utilities.
But here’s the interesting part — NIA is about 70 km from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
So why is the government building two international airports in the Delhi NCR region?
That’s because the number of airways passengers have been growing by 7% every year.
And even though the IGI airport is India’s largest and world’s 9th largest airport, it has its limitations due to constrained space.
It can’t be expanded more after Terminal T4.
During peak times, the traffic to the IGI airport becomes so bad, people often miss their flights.
This is where the NIA comes into play — it is planned to decongest the IGI Airport.
NIA is going to be one of its kind by merging Indian culture and hospitality with Swiss technology and efficiency.
It will show up in the design and architecture of the airport.
The terminal architecture will embrace local cultural and social aspects.
The three distinctive features of the design expressing this aspect are:
1. The Forecourt
The terminal forecourt will have a flight of steps like the ghats of Haridwar and Varanasi.
The forecourt is designed to mitigate the harshness of the climate and help users enjoy the time before starting their journey.
2. The Courtyard
A courtyard is planned in the middle of the departure lounge.
It will reduce energy costs as the courtyard will bring daylight and ambient air deep into the terminal.
3. The Landscape
Inspired by the important rivers of the region, a white, translucent, wavy roof will give the effect of a flowing river.
The passenger terminal will feature intricate ornamental lattice screens, inspired from the Purvanchal region.
The airport will provide a seamless passenger experience and set new benchmarks in sustainability for airport terminal buildings in India.
It aspires to serve as a local and regional hub while meeting passengers’ international standards.
Zurich Airport AG has set this vision for NIA to be India’s first net zero-emission airport operator.
Net zero emissions is a state where the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced is equal to the amount of greenhouse gas emissions removed from the atmosphere.
The airport’s development team is working to execute projects such as zero liquid discharge STP, onsite solar farm, waste management facility, use of green fuel, and rainwater harvesting projects as per the net zero requirements.
The NIA is not only trying to make travel efficient for its passengers but it’s also trying to make operations quick and efficient.
For easy and quick turnarounds of aircraft on the apron stands, the airport will introduce swing stands for the first time in India.
These stands will allow aircraft to arrive as international and depart as domestic or vice versa.
This will bring in operational efficiencies for airlines, while simplifying the passenger flows.
Now, here’s the 4 Phase master plan that will completely unfold by 2040:
Phase 1:
Phase 1 will have a Terminal 1 building of 90,000 sq m, a Code ‘E’ runway supported by CAT III approach, parallel end to end taxiway, an Air Traffic Control (ATC) building, cargo facility, commercial developments, metro & high speed rail stations, and other amenities.
Phase 2:
Phase 2 will be a mirror development of Phase 1, with a new Terminal 2, new runway, and parallel taxiway.
Phase 3:
Phase 3 envisions a new Terminal 3 with an area of 1,60,000 sq m, a new 2nd parallel taxiway conforming to Code F CAT III operations, 3 rapid exit taxiways, and an apron expansion with 37 additional bays.
Phase 4:
Phase 4 is the final phase that envisions a new Terminal 4 with an area of 1,60,000 sq m, expansion of cargo terminal to 1,50,000 sq m, apron expansion for 25 additional bays, 3 rapid exit taxiways in the northern runway, and a 2nd parallel taxiway.
Now, there are many cities in the world with multiple airports.
Cities like New York and London even have more than 6 airports.
Indian cities might not need 6 airports yet.
But India definitely needs at least one international airport in every state as the majority of international traffic of North Indian states is coming to the IGI Airport and the airport is handling more passengers than its capacity.
Bangalore is also going to get a second airport as the present Bangalore airport, KIA is expected to reach its annual capacity of 92 million per annum by 2032.
