Narrations from Shia sources on fasting the day of Ashura:
As always the Shia are ignorant of their own texts, just as they are ignorant of the Quran and Sunnah.
They falsely claim fasting Ashura is an Ummayad innovation to celebrate the murder of Hussain (ra).
However, fasting Ashura is mentioned in many reports by companions who have nothing to do with Banu Ummayah and were not against Ali (ra) or ahlul bayt such as Ibn Abbas who was even on the side of Ali at Siffin.
Regardless, reasoning with fools is a waste of reason.
1. Muhammad Al-Baqir ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ said: The day of Ashura is the day on which Allah created the sea for Banu Israel, drowning Firaun and his people. This is also the day when Moses triumphed over Firaun... (Kitab al-Tahdhib by al-Tusi, 4/300)
This is from the alleged fifth Imam.
Whilst this report is not clearly on fasting, it affirms Ashura had virtues that were known by the Shia Imams.
2. Al-Majlisi said in his book Bihar al-Anwar: When the Battle of Badr took place, in that year, the fasting of Ashura was observed and he (the Prophet) commanded its observance. In this year, Abdullah bin Salam converted to Islam. (Bihar al-Anwar, 19/129).
3. Al-Kulayni said in Al-Kafi 4/86:
As for the fasting in which the person has the choice, it includes the fasting on Fridays, Thursdays, the fasting of the white days, six days of Shawwal after Ramadan, the fasting of the Day of Arafah, and the fasting of the Day of Ashura.
4. Muhammad al-Baqir (fifth Imam) ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ said: As for the fasting in which the person has the choice, it is the fasting of the Day of Ashura. (Kitab al-Tahdhib by al-Tusi, 4/296, and Wasa'il al-Shi'a by al-Hurr al-Amili, 10/457).
5. From Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abi Talib ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ who said: The Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ fasted on the Day of Ashura. (Kitab al-Tahdhib by al-Tusi, 4/299, al-Istibsar by al-Tusi 2/134).
Al-Tusi is considered to be the shaykh of the Shia sect in scholarship.
6. Ali Al-Sajjad (the fourth Imam) ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ said: Fasting on the Day of Ashura is an expiation for a year. (Kitab al-Tahdhib by al-Tusi, 4/300, al-Istibsar by al-Tusi, 2/134, and Wasa'il al-Shi'a by al-Hurr al-Amili, 10/457).
7. Ali Al-Sajjad ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ said regarding the fasting in which the person has the choice, if he wishes he fasts and if he wishes he breaks the fast, it is the fasting of Ashura. (Wasa'il al-Shi'a by al-Hurr al-Amili, 10/458).
8. Ali Al-Ridha (the eight imam) ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ said about fasting on Fridays, Thursdays, the fasting of the white days, and fasting on the Day of Ashura, that the person has the choice, if he wishes he fasts and if he wishes he breaks it. (Mustadrak al-Wasa'il by al-Nuri, 6/380).
9. Ali Al-Ridha ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ said: The tenth of Muharram, which is the Day of Ashura, Allah sent down the tawbah of Adam, and said: Whoever fasts that day, seventy years of his sins will be forgiven, and his hidden deeds will be forgiven. (Mustadrak al-Wasa'il by al-Nuri, 7/523).
10. From Jubayr who said: Aisha ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ุง ูˆ ุฃุจูŠู‡ุง said: Whoever has advised you to fast on the Day of Ashura," they said, "Ali." She said, "He is indeed the most knowledgeable of people about the Sunnah."
(Bina' al-Maqalah al-Fatimiyah by Sayyid Ibn Tawus, p. 203, and al-'Addad al-Qawiyyah by Ibn al-Mutahhar al-Hilli, p. 240).
11. Ali ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ used to say: Fast on the ninth and tenth of Ashura as a precaution, for it is an expiation for the previous year. If one of you realizes it after eating, let him complete his fast. (Kitab al-Ja'fariyat, p. 63, by Isma'il ibn Musa ibn Ja'far ุฑุญู…ู‡ู… ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุฌู…ูŠุนุง).
12. Ja'far Al-Sadiq ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ narrated that even โ€œbeasts were fasting Ashura during the time of Dawud.โ€ (Kitab Al-Tahdhib by Al-Tusi 4/980)
13. From Mohammad bin Muslim and Zurarah, Al-Baqir ุฑุญู…ู‡ ุงู„ู„ู‡ told them about fasting Ashura that: it was fasted before Ramadhan, but after Ramadhan was made obligatory it was left. (Rawdhat Al-Mutaqeen 4/313)
14. Al-Majlisi reported that: The Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ and his progeny fasted the day of Ashura. (Maladh Al-Akhyar 7/116-118)
So as we see the Shia texts are riddled with reports on the virtues of Ashura and fasting the day of Ashura. Their texts also contain reports contradicting this, but this is their problem not ours ๐Ÿ˜‚.
Clearly Ashura is not some Nasibi bidaa out of hate for Husayn ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ , and this is going with Shia sources alone.
Otherwise their own Imams (who they claim have knowledge of ilm al ghayb) would also be Nasibi innovators.
Now, contrary to the poor Shia laymen online who mock Ahlul Sunnah or ascribe Nasb to them for fasting Ashura, their Marja's are far more reasonable with the topic.
Al-Tusi brings 4 reports for it and 4 reports against it in Al-Tahdhib.
Al-Majlisi weakened all the reports for it except for points 13 and 14 as I have brought.
Sa'eed Akhtar Rizvi rejected the reports based on calculations of dates (with the jews)
However this view of Rizvi is mistaken because counting back we can approximate that the month of Av which Jews gave a fast day corresponds to Muharram.
But to be fair calculations are patchy since the Hebrew calendar is quite strange.
Other Marjas like Sistani have said it's disliked, but Al-Khoy gave a fatwa disagreed and said it's favoured.
I will not be writing out any research from other Marjas because to be frank they are a waste of time
Al-Khoy's fatwa is as follows;
And as for the narratives that prohibit it, they are not authentic in their entirety; rather, they are weak individually. We do not have a reliable narration to rely on that carries opposition to the matter of taqiyya as done by the author of Al-Hada'iq.
As for the narratives that include the recommendation of fasting on this day, there are many, such as the authentic narration of Al-Qaddah: "Fasting on the Day of Ashura is an expiation for a year" and the authenticated narration of Mas'ada bin Sadaqa:
"Fast the ninth and tenth of Ashura, for it expiates the sins of a year," and others similar to it. Considering the observance of mourning with the Ahl al-Bayt and what strengthens it on this difficult day from hunger, thirst, and other great calamities.
which are the greatest of pains and afflictions. Thus, the strongest is the recommendation of fasting on this day as mentioned in Al-Jawahir, taking these sound texts into consideration as you know. (Kitab al-Sawm by Al-Khoei, part 2, page 305).
Thus not only are the Shia ignorant of the ahadith of Ahlul Sunnah (which that thread completely butchered) but they are ignorsnt of their own religion too.
