Pretty much all of the myths about the Pleiades across the world describe them as being seven sisters, with some going onto explain why there are now only six. There are indeed seven stars, but the last time the 7th was distinguishable with the naked eye was 100,000 years ago

Without the benefit of a telescope, Pleione and Atlas look like a single star. Pleione was "above" Atlas and far enough away to be distinguishable until about 100,000 years ago
