Where are the sacraments in the Bible?
They're all in the Gospel of John.
John records 7 miracles and each one corresponds to one of the 7 sacraments
(save this thread 🧵)
The Gospel of John is all about how Jesus established the New Sacrifice in the New Temple.
Each Sacrament is a brick in the New Temple
The last one is the most important (so read to the end)
It all begins at a wedding in Cana...
Matrimony – Jesus Turns Water Into Wine
Jesus's first miracle takes place at a wedding.
The couple runs out of wine, so Mary asks Jesus to step in.
He has the servants fill six jars with water and He turns the water into wine
Marriage existed before Jesus came
But its "wine" had run out. It was no longer a source of Grace.
So, Jesus took ordinary water and turned it into new wine.
In marriage, He takes an ordinary couple and fills their relationship with grace.
Anointing of the Sick – Jesus Heals the Centurion's Son
The centurion's son was sick "to the point of death" and Jesus healed him
Through Anointing of the Sick, Jesus gives us the strength to face death.
Confession – Jesus Heals the Paralytic
A man was paralyzed for 40 years.
Jesus asks him if he would like to be healed.
Jesus heals the man and tells him to go and sin no more.
The 40 years the man sat at the pool symbolizes the Israelites wandering in the desert (and us wandering in our sin.)
Jesus insists the man ask to be healed, just like we have to ask to be forgiven in Confession
Just like the paralytic, we commit to "Go and sin no more."
Eucharist – Jesus Multiplies Loaves
Jesus sees a hungry crowd.
A boy in the crowd gives Him five loaves and two fish.
Jesus multiplies it and feeds the whole crowd.
Now, Jesus feeds the whole world with His Body in the Eucharist.
Baptism – Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
A man born blind asks Jesus to be healed.
Jesus puts clay on his eyes and tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam.
The man does, and he can see.
We are also born blind.
We are born with original sin and cannot see God.
But when we wash in the water of Baptism, our eyes are opened.
Confirmation – Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead
Lazarus is raised from the dead and immediately persecuted.
Confirmation strengthens the Baptized and prepares us for the persecution inevitable in the Christian life.
Priesthood – Jesus Rises from the Dead
At the Last Supper, John skips the institution of the Eucharist
The other Gospels covered that.
He is focused on the institution of the Priesthood.
Before He dies, Jesus gives his apostles "a share with Him" (John 13:8)
This "share" is a share in His Priesthood.
When He dies and rises, Jesus creates a new sacrifice (John 4:23)
The Apostles are His priests who will make that sacrifice available to the whole world
None of these "prove" the sacraments
And admittedly, some connections are clearer than others.
But the spiritual sense of scripture is not always immediately obvious
That doesn't make it untrue
