❝ʿUmar Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb encountered a woman known as Khawlah while he was walking among the people. She stopped him, and he stood for her. He approached her, inclined his head to listen, and placed his hands on her shoulders until she had finished speaking and then he left. A man said to him: ‘O Amīr al-Mūʾminīn, you detained the men of Quraysh for the sake of this elderly woman.’ ʿUmar replied: ʿWoe to you! Do you know who this woman is?’ The man said: ʿNo.’ Umar said, ʿThis woman, by Allāh, her complaint was heard by Allah from above the seven heavens. This is Khawlah Bint Thaʾlabah. I swear by Allāh, if she hadn’t turned away from me until the night, I wouldn't have turned away until her need was fulfilled.’”❞
