After further thought I think it's actually the BSD/Linux/FOSS takeover of the Internet from old suit-and-tie 20th century computing. Back in the 80s, the culture gap between what would become the FOSS community and how governments/companies actually used computers was huge.
Then Microsoft stapled BSD sockets to Windows, and eventually replaced their whole OS with a VMS clone, while Apple turned MacOS into a theme pack for NextSTEP, and Linux/BSD basically ate the whole non-IBM/MS server industry.
Suddenly these nerdy college kids and homegrown hackers were the ones calling the shots, and making buckets of money in the process. The culture bent to their whims. And what did they want? Eternal college. "Campuses" instead of cube farms, dressed down attire, beer pong.
The services they built turned the whole broadband connected world into one big campus. Personal communication over email or chat, Usenet/forum flame wars, giant timesharing clusters called "clouds," wiring up pizza delivery and taxi services to the network...
It's all straight out of some 80s or 90s college computing story, but scaled up to the entire planet. There's now continuity between campus culture and the working world. So of course people feel like they're faking it!
That's part of why foreigners feel so entitled They got tricked into thinking they were just as good as our best college students by membership in a campus network, only to be told by governments, employers, women, etc. that actually no you're too smelly brown and dumb for us.
Conversely it also means the only people who DO experience growing up are the ones who either don't go to college, or go later, without just neeting at home with their parents. The dislocation might only be a year or two (or four for an enlistment) but it apparently matters.
Imagine your entire high school graduating class, regardless of ability, dropped into college dorms the following September for the cost of room and board and like 200 bucks a month for Netflix and uber. They'd never leave! They'd never grow up!
So it went, online.
This also ties into politics - fringe campus whacko positions from ~10 years ago become DNC policy because that's how long it takes a FAANGM college hire to start pulling down major stock comp and that's their only source of big donors besides elderly Jews.
Given the foreign Communist origins of these groups pushing left wing nonsense on campus, removing them at bayonet point is therefore a critical national security policy. Push out the leftoids and national politics heals in less than a generation.
