empire Muslims faced social, economic and political turmoil. Many Muslims scholars and activists tried to reform Islam. In the post-ottoman world traditionalist authority was contested by various groups that emerged in the post-ottoman world. Groups like Modernists, purist Salafis
and Wahabism got support of secular governments. The traditionalists were not ready for these challenges which led to strict uncritical taqlid of the tradition. Salafis used many rhetoric against the traditionalists to contest the authority, for example layman
and expert opinions are same, but in reality even the purist salafis have acknowledged that laymen are inadequate to interpret Quran and expert opinions should be given tarjih. This book explores the many debates between Traditionalists and Salafis; on issues like Hadith
, Madhabism, fiqh rulings, Sunna and Quran and other issues. Although, I found this book bit repetitive and how traditionalists see itself in the modern world, but it is a good book overall.
